PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Milwaukee School of Engineering scored just over a minute into the match, setting the tone early in a 6-0 defeat of the Lakeland University women's soccer team Wednesday night at Taylor Field.
The Muskies played from behind almost the entire match as the Raiders scored three times in the first 19 minutes and added three more in the second half. Lakeland dropped to 2-4 overall and 2-4 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division after falling to one of the top teams in the division.
MSOE (5-1 overall, 4-1 NACC North) won in a shutout for the fifth time this season, controlling play the entire way with a 35-4 advantage in shots and peppering Lakeland goalkeepers with 21 shots on goal. The Raiders scored in bunches in both halves, including two goals just over five minutes apart in the first half plus three goals in just over 10 minutes in the second half.
Megan Core scored the first goal 1 minute, 10 seconds in to give MSOE the lead, and Nikki Ratts scored her first of two goals in the 14th minute for a 2-0 lead. McKayla Zastrow followed at 18:40 of the match, running on for a blast straight on from 45 yards out that went over the head of goalkeeper
Erin Tomlinson (
Jr.-Madison, Wis.) to make it 3-0.
The score remained that way into the second half and until Ratts scored again in the 59th minute to give MSOE a 4-0 lead. Brooke Zidek and Gabby Hoffman then added two more goals 55 seconds apart to cap the scoring.
The Muskies had few sustained rushes, and all four of their shots came off of free kicks, including a pair on goal by
Rachel Wilson (
Sr.-Gilbert, Ariz.) and two more by fellow senior
Amanda Buckler (
Sheridan, Wyo.).
Tomlinson made 12 saves in goal in 71:26 before freshman
McKenna Gibson (
Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) came on and made three saves. MSOE defeated Lakeland for the 12th time in the teams' last 13 meetings, moving ahead in the all-time series 18-14.
Lakeland is back on the field for its home finale next Wednesday when it hosts Marian University at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field.
