MEQUON, Wis. – A relentless offensive attack by Concordia University Wisconsin made for a long day for the Lakeland University baseball team, as the Falcons scored 38 runs over two games in posting a doubleheader sweep of the Muskies Sunday afternoon at Kapco Park.
Concordia won the first game by a 25-13 score and then posted a 13-3 win in the second game, with both contests finished after seven innings due to the 10-run rule. The Falcons finished winning three of four games in the teams' series over the weekend, and with the wins moved ahead of Lakeland in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division standings.
The Muskies dropped to 8-8 in the NACC North and are in fourth in the division heading into the final series of divisional play. Lakeland still has plenty of time to move up in the standings as it will host divisional co-leader Marian University, which is tied for first with Milwaukee School of Engineering with 10-6 records while Concordia Wisconsin is a game back at 9-7.
The Muskies (14-14 overall) will be glad to not face Concordia anymore after the Falcons roughed up Lakeland pitching to the tune of 56 runs scored over four games Saturday and Sunday. CUW (19-13 overall) piled up 32 hits over two games on Sunday, but also took advantage of Muskies' wildness including 14 walks and 10 hit batters.
The Falcons put up innings of eight, five and nine runs in the ultra-wild first game, where Lakeland scored multiple runs in five different innings and actually held a 4-1 lead in the second inning which included a two-run single by
OakLee Spens (
Fr.-Burbank, Calif.). Concordia would score eight in the bottom of the second, though, and added five more in the fourth to take a 16-6 lead, then nine more in the fifth to lead by as much as 25-9.
CUW's outburst offset career games for
Collin Schutz (
Sr.-Saint Amant, La.) and
Kellen Hodges (
Fr.-Littleton, Colo.), as Schutz went 3-for-4 with a career-high five runs batted in and Hodges posted a collegiate-high four hits. Spens also drove in three runs, but the Falcons wore out the Lakeland pitching staff, which went through eight different players over seven innings.
The Muskies were in contention in the second game until Concordia erupted again late, scoring nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings. Lakeland scored first with two runs in the third from run-scoring singles by
Jack Banks (
Sr.-Mountain View, Calif.) and Hodges, and the Muskies tied it at 3-3 in the fifth when
Tyler LaMack (
Fr.-Pewaukee, Wis.) hit a solo home run for his fourth homer of the season.
Concordia took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth against starting pitcher
Peyton Domangue (
Fr.-Thibodaux, La.), and then scored six times against the Muskies' bullpen in the sixth, including a two-run home run by Kyle Kosubucki. The Falcons then finished the game on account of the 10-run rule in the seventh, scoring with one out in the bottom of the inning.
The Muskies will wrap up the home portion of their season Friday when they take on Marian for a doubleheader starting at noon.
