Series history: 5th meeting, Beloit leads 4-0
The Muskies and Buccaneers have met just four times prior in men's soccer, but all four have been close and three have been heartbreaking losses for Lakeland. Beloit won the most recent matchup at Taylor Field two years ago, taking a 3-2 decision in overtime when Grady Spencer scored the game-winner in the 93rd minute to cap a rally from two goals down in the second half.
Alessandro Bianchi and
Andres Gonzalez both scored goals in that match for the Muskies early in the second half. The other three previous meetings came between 2008-10, with the Bucs winning all three including edging the Muskies 6-5 in overtime in Beloit Sept. 17, 2008, in an action-packed first-ever meeting between the schools, That wild match saw the Buccaneers take a 3-1 lead into halftime before Lakeland scored four straight second-half goals to go ahead 5-3, only to see the hosts score twice in the final six minutes of regulation to tie and then tally the winning goal with 2:02 left in the first overtime.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at Ripon 2-1 Sunday
Michecadet Gethand scored his first goal of the season but the Muskies were unable to come all the way back from a two-goal deficit in their season opener. Lakeland held a solid shots advantage in the match, outshooting the Red Hawks 14-6 and putting 12 shots on goal. Ripon scored twice late in the first half, including a penalty kick to open the scoring in the 33rd minute. Gethand and
Michael Barragan led the Muskies with three shot attempts each while
Zach Heiman made his first collegiate start in goal and made three saves for Lakeland.
The Muskies are home for the first time since their short spring season, after last fall's campaign was moved to this spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lakeland finished 2-3-1 in the spring and was in line to earn a spot in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament before the season ended early due to coronavirus protocols.
Beloit last time out: Lost at Wisconsin Lutheran 2-1 Wednesday
The Buccaneers lost for the first time this season on Wednesday against Lakeland's NACC rival Wisconsin Lutheran, as the Warriors scored twice in the first 10:29 and held on the rest of the way for the win. WLC scored its first goal just 13 seconds into the match and Beloit played from behind the rest of the way. The Bucs scored their lone goal 1:40 into the second half with Patrick Casola scoring his second of the season, but Beloit could not break through again despite outshooting Lutheran 19-8 for the match.
About the Buccaneers: Beloit did not compete last season due to the coronavirus. The Buccaneers did finish 5-11-2 in 2019 in their most recent season, including a 3-6 record in the Midwest Conference. Brad Williams is the new coach for the Buccaneers and was just hired to lead the program in August after former coach Duncan Gillis left to take over the head position at fellow NCAA Division III program Caltech.
