Muskies drop three against more stiff competition at UW-Eau Claire Schumacher tourney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 The Lakeland University women's volleyball team continued to search for the right combinations with more trial by fire at the eighth annual Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Friday and Saturday.

The Muskies faced a trio of opponents in or near the national rankings and finished 0-3 for the weekend. Lakeland was swept by Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) College 25-11, 25-17, 25-18 and host UW-Eau Claire 25-14, 25-20, 25-17 and fell in four sets to Augsburg (Minn.) University 25-20, 25-15, 22-25, 25-19.

The Muskies (1-9 overall) faced an Eau Claire team ranked 12th in the latest AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll, plus Gustavus Adolphus and Augsburg teams both receiving votes in the latest poll. Lakeland battled in all three matches but struggled on the attack, posting no better than a .019 hitting percentage against UW-Eau Claire.

The Muskies' brightest moment came in the third set against Augsburg when they rallied from a 20-15 deficit to snag the third set. Maeve Sullivan (So.-Chicago, Ill.) served two of her four aces in the match in a closing 10-2 run as Lakeland extended the match to a fourth set. The Muskies then rallied late in the set again with nine straight points, including two kills each from S'Niya Gantt (Fr.-Dallas, Texas) and Emily Duchow (Jr.-Potter, Wis.) to cut a 20-10 deficit to 20-19 before the Auggies finished the match with the final five points.

Susana Stevens (Fr.-Las Cruces, N.M.) finished with 25 kills on the day and led Lakeland in kills in all three matches on the way to earning all-tournament honors. Brelynn Scoles (So.-Kewaskum, Wis.) also tied for team honors with nine kills against UW-Eau Claire. Duchow led the team with 47 assists over three matches and posted her first collegiate double-double with 18 assists and a career-best 11 digs against Augsburg. Sydney Pingitore (Sr.-Kenosha, Wis.) added 25 digs for the day.

Lakeland now takes a nearly two-week break before diving into the heart of its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schedule. The Muskies' next will play Friday, Oct. 1, when they travel to face Concordia University Chicago in River Forest, Ill., at 7 p.m.
