Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

MSOE scores three goals late to pull away from Lakeland

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – A match seemingly headed for a dramatic finish turned in the final 15 minutes late as Milwaukee School of Engineering pulled away late to defeat the Lakeland University men's soccer team 5-1 Wednesday night at Taylor Field.

The Raiders scored three times in a span of 11 minutes, 11 seconds, turning a close game into a convincing win and claiming the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. MSOE also avenged a loss at Lakeland in the spring season and stayed undefeated in conference (2-0) while Lakeland dropped to 0-3 overall.

The Muskies (1-4-1 overall) appeared to have a chance to tie and possibly send the game into overtime as they spent a good part of the second half on the attack. The tide turned, though, when Zach Thompson sent a pass from the right wing towards the middle to Jack Van Dyke, who quickly punched it into the left corner of the net for a 3-1 lead at 75:03 of the match.

MSOE would control play from there and would score two more goals less than three minutes apart. Daniel D'Amato scored both, with Thompson also assisting on one in the 84th minute and a quick tic-tac-toe with Sean McTighe and Connor Dees assisting D'Amato in the 87th minute for the final score.

Lakeland played from behind almost the entire game, from the time MSOE (4-3-1 overall) scored 1:27 into the match. The Muskies eventually fell down by a 2-0 score and seemed to have little energy for a comeback until scoring just over a minute before halftime.

The Muskies received a corner kick that appeared to be somewhat of a surprise to both teams, but they cashed in. Michael Barragan (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) struck a corner into the box that was headed by Joseph Reyes (So.-Pico River, Calif.), and his shot found its way through to cut the guests' lead to 2-1.

Lakeland was then much better for most of the second half, even controlling possession for long periods and spend plenty of time in the Raiders' defensive end. The Muskies had a tough time penetrating the MSOE back line, though, and had just one second-half shot attempt by Suleiman Haji (So.-Mankato, Minn.).

Zach Heiman (So.-Racine, Wis.) made 10 saves in goal for Lakeland while allowing four goals, and Lee Kellom (Fr.-Michigan City, Ind.) made his debut and allowed one goal while also stopping one shot in the final minutes.

Thompson finished with three assists for MSOE, which outshot the Muskies 22-2, including a 16-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Lakeland will get another shot at home on Saturday when it welcomes Aurora University for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Taylor Field.
