Spartans break the ice in second half, edge Muskies by a goal

PLYMOUTH, Wis. - Aurora University broke a scoreless tie 65 minutes into the match and the Lakeland University men's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision Saturday afternoon at home at Taylor Field.

The Muskies remained winless in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference while the Spartans picked up their first conference win of the season. Lakeland dropped to 1-5-1 overall and 0-4 in the NACC while Aurora improved to 3-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in conference games.

The Spartans scored the only goal of the match 20 minutes into the second half. Anthony Marmolejo sent a ball through the defense ahead to Enrique Gonzalez, who buried a shot just inside the right post from about 13 yards out.

The Muskies spent much of the rest of the match on defense and would not get off another shot. Lakeland's best chance came with less than four minutes left with a corner kick attempt and a strong wind blowing towards the Aurora goal, but the Spartans cleared the corner by Michael Barragan (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.).

The Muskies' best chances came earlier in the second half, including a near miss in the 52nd minute. An Aurora takeaway just outside the 18 was deflected to Thomas Sanuk (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.), who ran on to hit a shot from 25 yards out that hit the right post.

Aurora went through stretches of dominating possession but Lakeland also had three more shots in the first half, including a pair from Ben Taylor (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.). All came in the first 11:30 of the second half, though, and the Spartans controlled play the rest of the way.

Zach Heiman (So.-Racine, Wis.) made two saves in goal for Lakeland. Joseph Reyes (So.-Pico River, Calif.) also was responsible for a team save for the Muskies, clearing an Aurora shot off the goal line in the first half.

Lakeland is on the road for its next match when it travels to take on Concordia University Chicago on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
