RIVER FOREST, Ill. –
Michecadet Gethand (
So.-Jackson, Wis.) scored early in the second half to break a tie and the Lakeland University men's soccer team made the lead stand up the rest of the way in a 2-1 win over Concordia University Chicago Wednesday afternoon at Concordia Stadium.
Gethand scored a goal and also added an assist as the Muskies went on the road and topped the Cougars to pick up their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season and snap a four-match losing streak. Lakeland improved to 2-5-1 overall and 1-4 in the NACC while Concordia dropped to 3-4-2 overall and 1-2-2 in conference.
Lakeland scored the eventual winning goal just over two minutes into the second half with hard work in front of the CUC goal eventually paying off.
Suleiman Haji (
So.-Mankato, Minn.) and
Brandon Uhlean (
So.-Tinley Park, Ill.) both intercepted Concordia passes, and Uhlean after the second dribbled briefly before finding Gethand nearby on the left hashmark. Gethand took a dribble and then burst up the middle through a seam before unleashing a blast from 20 yards out into the top right corner of the net.
The Muskies would hold the Cougars off the board the rest of the way, despite Concordia outshooting Lakeland 14-5 in the second half.
Zach Heiman (
So.-Racine, Wis.) made five saves in the final 45 minutes and Muskies also blocked a number of CUC shots in the field, including a final deflected away by
Joseph Reyes (
So.-Pico River, Calif.) in the closing seconds.
The host Cougars opened the scoring in the first half just 6 minutes, 25 seconds into the match when Ryan Kuhlman headed in a cross from Austin Montejano for a 1-0 lead. Lakeland would answer just over ten minutes later with a quick counter started by
Ben Taylor (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) with a long pass ahead from the defensive line. His pass would find Gethand, who collected and sent it ahead through to
Andres Gonzalez (
Jamul, Calif.). The sophomore midfielder would get to the ball before a trio of CUC defenders, including goalkeeper Nicholas Pasut coming out of the box, and Gonzalez poked it past the keeper from 20 yards out into the open net.
Gethand finished with three shot attempts and Reyes added two for Lakeland, which was outshot 20-7 and put three shots on goal, scoring on two. Heiman made seven saves to earn his second win of the season, while Joseph Perez made the lone save for Concordia.
The Muskies are in action again Saturday in NACC play when they travel to face Benedictine University at 4 p.m.
