Home fog advantage: Muskies use Reyes goal to top Cougars for first win of season

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Marlen Reyes Robelo (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) scored in the 55th minute and the Lakeland University women's soccer team overcame unusual weather conditions to earn its first win of the season with a 1-0 defeat of Concordia University Chicago Wednesday night.

The Muskies defeated the Cougars for the first time in ten meetings and did so in heavy fog which rolled into Taylor Field during the game. Lakeland also picked up its first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season, improving to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in conference while Concordia saw a three-match unbeaten streak ended in dropping to 1-6-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the NACC.

A light fog which lingered and slowly descended upon the field in the first half became a thick cloud at field level at halftime, leaving very limited visibility by the start of the second half. The fog occasionally lightened at times in the second half before returning in earnest, leaving spectators often only able to guess at the action on the field and players challenged to see more than a dozen yards in front of them.

The fog was heavy early in the second half and few in the stands saw the play far across the field in front of the benches when Faith Turley (So.-Lincoln, Ill.) sent a pass ahead to Reyes, who was able to beat Concordia goalkeeper Kassie Silenzi to the ball and put it into an open net at 54 minutes, 20 seconds of the match. The first goal of the season for Reyes broke a scoreless tie, and also gave the Muskies their first lead of the season.

Seemingly buoyed by the fog, the Muskies played as if on a tilted field for a good share of the second half, outshooting the Cougars 7-3 over the final 45 minutes. Desiree Jacobson (So.-Lansing, Mich.) and Hope Cerney (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) joined Reyes to combine for five shots and a number of quality chances among the three, and Turley and Alani Chairez (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) also added shot attempts.

Concordia made a charge late, including a shot by Allie Brown from 15 yards out in the 79th minute that scraped the top of the crossbar before going out of play. Haley Rich (Jr.-West Chicago, Ill.) also made a stop of a shot by Lucia Fullone in the 87th minute, and the Cougars' final chance came on a free kick by Meagan Wilkinson that went wide with just under a minute left. Lakeland was able to burn off the final minute with outstanding defense with Chairez, Ellie Rau (So.-West Allis, Wis.) and Abby Runkel (Fr.-Burlington, Wis.) all clearing the ball down the field to keep CUC well out of range.

Rich finished with five saves for her first collegiate shutout while Silenzi made six saves in goal for Concordia, which finished with a 9-7 advantage in shots in the game including a 6-0 margin in the first half.

Lakeland hits the road for its next game Saturday when it travels to face Benedictine University at 1 p.m. in Lisle, Ill.
