Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Reyes fires in the winner as Lakeland edges Alverno on Senior Day

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Alondra Reyes (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) scored the winning goal in the 78th minute and the Lakeland University women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 1-0 victory over Alverno College Saturday at Taylor Field.

The Muskies dominated possession throughout but needed almost all of the 90 minutes to finally get ahead of the stubborn Inferno. Lakeland improved to 5-10 this season and has now surpassed its win total over the previous two seasons and has its most wins since winning six games in 2018.

The Muskies scored the winning goal on an attack started just past midfield. Gwynn Manteufel (So.-Kewaskum, Wis.) sent a ball ahead that Amanda Heimos (Jr.-Cary, Ill.) was able to get away from an Alverno defender. The ball went to Reyes, who hit a looping shot from 30 yards out over the head of goalkeeper Georgia Wise and just inside the right post for her seventh goal of the season and what wound up as her second game-winning goal.

The Muskies finished with a 28-1 advantage in shots over the Inferno (0-11-1 overall), who entered the match winless and with just one goal in their previous 11 games. Despite regularly being on the attack, though, a goal proved elusive most of the match despite several outstanding opportunities.

Lakeland hit the crossbar on shots twice in the first half alone, with Faith Turley (Jr.-Lincoln, Ill.) hitting the bar in the 21st minute and Allison Solberg Kieler (Fr.-Ridgeway, Wis.) dinging the pipe with just over three minutes left in the first half. The teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half despite the Muskies outshooting the Alverno 17-0.

Lakeland had more chances in the second half, including a corner kick headed by Jenna Caterino (So.-Stanton, Mich.) that Wise stopped for one of her 15 saves. Turley and Hanna Brouch (So.-Kaukauna, Wis.) also had shots on goal before Reyes scored the go-ahead tally.

Marlen Reyes (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Muskies with six shot attempts, with Alondra Reyes and Caterino adding five shots each.

Haley Rich (Sr.-West Chicago, Ill.) had to make just one save in the 70th minute but recorded her second shutout of the season. It came on a Senior Day when Rich and Riley Jahnke (Howards Grove, Wis.) were honored as the team's lone two seniors playing their second-to-last home match.

Lakeland plays its final home match this Wednesday when it faces Marian University at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field.
