Series history:Â 37th meeting, Marian leads 24-12
The Sabres are the most-played opponent in Lakeland women's soccer history, as the teams have faced off 36 times prior. Marian has dominated the series of late, winning the last 13 matchups including most recently a 3-0 win in Fond du Lac just under a year ago on Oct. 20, 201. Lakeland last defeated Marian in the final game of the 2008 season, scoring a 2-1 win as Amy Christenson scored the winning goal in the 72nd minute. The Sabres won the first 10 meetings in the series, which began in 1993, before the Muskies earned their first win in 1999 and proceeded to win 11 straight.
Lakeland last time out: Defeated Alverno 1-0 Saturday
The Muskies dominated play in the field but needed a goal on a looping shot by
Alondra Reyes in the 78th minute to finally overtake the Inferno.
Gwynn Manteufel started the winning rally with a pass ahead from near midfield that
Amanda Heimos was able to deflect away from an Alverno defender to Reyes, whose shot from 30 yards out went over the head of Inferno goalkeeper Georgia Wise and into the net with 12:08 left in the match. Lakeland outshot Alverno 28-1 in the match with Alondra (5 shots),
Marlen Reyes (6) and
Jenna Caterino (5) combining for 16 shot attempts.
Haley Rich needed to make just one save to earn the shutout win.
The Muskies are playing at home for the final time this season, with two road games to close out the campaign after tonight. Lakeland's win over Alverno gives it more wins than the previous two seasons combined, and its most wins in a season since 2018.
Marian last time out: Defeated Aurora 3-2 Saturday
The Sabres rallied from a 2-1 deficit at halftime to earn an important win in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play. Meghan Batzner started the scoring with a goal just over seven minutes into the match and closed it with the game-winner with 1:41 left in the game to break a 2-2 tie. Ashley Welk also scored the tying goal in the 74th minute and added assists on both of Batzner's goals. Amy Birner made two saves to get the win in goal as Marian outshot the Spartans 19-7 and moved further ahead of Aurora in the NACC standings. The Sabres sit in seventh in the conference, four points behind sixth-place St. Norbert and currently one spot out in the race to play in the six-team NACC Tournament.
Marian is led by a first-year coach, as Chris Gaskin came to Fond du Lac after spending the past three seasons at NAIA member Iowa Wesleyan.
