KOHLER –
Mary Blossom (
Fr.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) and
Sadie Conway (
Jr.-Monroe, Wis.) led a group of four double-winners and the Lakeland University women's tennis team clinched a spot in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament with an 8-1 win over Concordia University Chicago Sunday.
The Muskies wrapped up the sixth and final spot in the conference tourney with their second dual win in two days. One season after winning just one conference dual, Lakeland (5-6 overall, 4-5 NACC) will be the No. 6 seed in the six-team NACC Tournament, which will be played in the spring.
The Muskies' turnaround has been keyed by a strong group of freshmen including Blossom, who has warmed to the task as the season went on. Blossom finished the fall winning three of her final four No. 2 singles matches, including a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Ali Wingood of Concordia.
Blossom also paired up with Conway for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Heidi Hesse and Alexa Hoover. Conway also won her singles match in dominant fashion, blanking Hoover 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
