HANCOCK, Mich. –
Isaiah Hammond (
So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) ripped down a career-high 18 rebounds and the Lakeland University men's basketball team easily handled Finlandia (Mich.) University 106-72 Tuesday night at the Paavo Nurmi Center.
Seven players scored in double figures and the Muskies never trailed in cruising past the Lions. Lakeland won its second straight non-conference game to start the season, improving to 2-0.
Hammond notched his first collegiate double-double, finishing with 12 points on 6 of 7 shooting to go along with his 18 boards. His rebound total was the most by a Lakeland player in more than 10 years, since Jake Schwarz grabbed 20 caroms against Wisconsin Lutheran College Jan. 19, 2012.
The Muskies needed less than 4 1/2 minutes to build a double-digit lead, going ahead 19-7 on a three-pointer by
Kai Buliox (
So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) at the 15:35 mark of the first half. The lead would never fall below double digits again.
Finlandia (1-2 overall) stayed within striking distance for a while, cutting a 21-point deficit to 13 on several occasions in the first half, the last time on a three-pointer by Emmett Johnson making it 48-35 with 6:11 left in the half. Lakeland would finish the half on a 12-3 run, though, to take a 60-38 halftime lead, and the Muskies would lead by as much as 36 points in the second half.
Lakeland finished shooting 51.9%, making 41 of 79 shots. Finlandia hit just 24 of 73 shots (32.9%), and also committed 26 turnovers.
Buliox finished with 19 points and
Asanjai Hunter (
Fr.-Racine, Wis.) and
Travis Kohlmann (
So.-Kiel, Wis.) added 15 points each.
Tylan Huff (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) scored 13,
Christian Knox (
Sr.-Ypsilanti, Mich.) chipped in 11 and
Gage Cornell (
Fr.-Manitowoc, Wis.) added 10 points off the bench, making all four of his shot attempts.
Hammond also paced the Muskies with six assists. Kohlmann also added with seven rebounds, five assists and five steals.
Johnson led Finlandia with 16 points and Ilrick Higgins-Moise added 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Lions outrebounded Lakeland 48-46 but the Muskies finished with a huge 58-24 lead in points in the paint plus a 32-13 bulge in points off turnovers.
Lakeland has another week break before its next game when it hosts Martin Luther (Minn.) College next Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
