CHICAGO – The Lakeland University men's basketball team held an opponent to the lowest point total in nearly eight years in a 69-50 win over Moody Bible Institute Tuesday night.
The 50 points allowed is the fewest by a Lakeland opponent since Dec. 30, 2014, when the Muskies shut down Illinois Institute of Technology in a 92-45 win at the Defiance (Ohio) College Purple & Gold Tournament.
Lakeland improved to 6-2 overall with its third straight win, easing past the Archers primarily with defense and rebounding. The Muskies held Moody (0-9 overall) to 35.8% shooting, forced 18 turnovers and also outrebounded the hosts 40-27.
Lakeland started slow and the teams were tied just before the midway point of the first half until
Tylan Huff (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) made a jumper for 16-14 lead. The Muskies would never trail again, including holding the Archers to eight points in the final 10 minutes, 53 seconds of the first half on the way to a 36-22 halftime lead.
Lakeland would build a 45-25 lead early in the second half, but Moody would hang around and get as close as 11 points at 48-37 after a DeMorion Jackson layup with 11:39 left. The Muskies would hold the Archers to 13 points the rest of the game, though, leading by as much as 21 points late.
Christian Knox (
Sr.-Ypsilanti, Mich.) paced Lakeland with 16 points, including four three-pointers, and also added six assists.
Kai Buliox (
So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) scored 14 points,
Isaiah Hammond (
So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) added nine points, nine rebounds and five assists and
Caleb Fuller (
Jr.-Oshkosh, Wis.) added eight points.
The Muskies finished shooting 41.8% (28 of 67), including 9 of 31 from three-point range (29.0%). Lakeland also committed just six turnovers and improved to 6-0 all-time against the Archers in the teams' first meeting since 1994.
Christian Pollard led Moody Bible with a game-high 23 points. Jackson also added 12 points plus 13 rebounds.
Lakeland returns to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action when it travels to face Aurora University Saturday at 2 p.m. in Aurora, Ill.
