AURORA, Ill. – The Lakeland University women's basketball team ran into a buzzsaw as Aurora University delivered a scorching-hot shooting performance in a 112-67 rout of the Muskies Friday night at Thornton Gymnasium.
The Spartans made 60.6% of their shots and set a school record for points in a game to avenge a loss to Lakeland back in December. Aurora shot better than 56% in both halves, setting a scoring pace the Muskies couldn't match in dropping to 11-11 overall and 7-8 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Spartans scored 53 points in the first half, including 30 points in the second quarter to take a 14-point halftime lead. Lakeland stuck with the hosts for a while, trailing just 30-29 with 6 minutes, 57 seconds left in the second period after a three-pointer by
Lauren Downs (
Jr.-West Bend, Wis.), but Aurora responded with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes, including back-to-back threes by Gabby Moore and Crystal Rios.
Aurora would blow the game open in the third quarter with a 23-1 run over a stretch of less than six minutes. The Spartans would make 13 of 16 shots in the period, including 5 of 6 from three-point range, and in all outscored the Muskies 34-12 in the quarter to take an 87-51 lead. Aurora still didn't cool off in the fourth quarter, reaching the 100-point mark for the fourth time this season and doing so with 5:41 left in the game.
Aurora made 43 of 71 shots and hit 56.4% (22 of 39) in the first half and even better at 65.6% (21 of 32) in the second half. The Spartans also made 10 of 24 from three-point range (41.7%) and 16 of 20 free throws (80.0%).
Hayley Walding (
Sr.-Bradenton, Fla.) led Lakeland with 13 points and hit 3 of 4 from three-point range, again having success on the Spartans' home court two years to the day after she set a career high with 27 points in a Muskies' double-overtime win at Aurora.
Ellie Felsinger (
Jr.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) also scored 10 points and Downs and
Kerstin Sauerbrei (
So.-Ripon, Wis.) added nine points each.
Nicole Sachman (
Jr.-Niles, Mich.) also finished with six points and three rebounds, all in the fourth quarter.

Moore and Rios scored 19 points each to lead five scoring in double figures for Aurora. The Spartans also committed just eight turnovers and outrebounded the Muskies 41-32.
