Series history: 18th meeting, MSOE leads 12-5
The two teams' 17 previous meetings makes MSOE easily the most-played opponent for Lakeland since it moved the program to the varsity level in 2014. MSOE has won 11 of the last 12 meetings, including most recently a three-set sweep last season March 5, 2021 in Milwaukee. The teams haven't met at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium in over three years, since a Raiders' three-set win Feb. 23, 2019. The Muskies' last win in the series was a four-set victory at home March 21, 2018. Lakeland won the first three meetings ever between the two schools, including a three-set sweep in their first-ever meeting just over eight years ago on Feb. 21, 2014.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at Marian 3-0 Wednesday
The Muskies played from behind most of the first two sets and then lost a hard-fought third set, falling to the Sabres 25-18, 25-16, 28-26 in a non-conference match between Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference rivals. Lakeland struggled in the first two sets but battled in the third set and even had a set points at 25-24 before Marian came back to win the set and wrap up the match.
Colin Kenney finished with eight kills and Cam Ekum added 16 assists, 10 digs and two service aces for the Muskies, who lost their third straight match and third match in six days.
MSOE last time out: Won at Illinois Tech 3-0; lost to Saint Xavier (Ill.) 3-1 last Saturday
The Raiders last played a week ago in a triangular with a pair of Chicago schools. MSOE swept IIT 25-19, 25-18, 25-18 in an NACC match with Josh Kleinschmidt (15) and Tommy Clausz (11) combining for 26 kills and Daniel Drag leading the defense with 16 digs. The Raiders then fell to NAIA member St. Xavier, the Cougars prevailing 25-17, 16-25, 25-15, 25-18. Austyn Bella led MSOE with 10 kills and Drag added 15 digs.
About the Raiders: MSOE had won six of its first seven matches before falling to St. Xavier, with its only other loss coming to nationally ranked North Central (Ill.). The Raiders have traditionally been a first-division team in the NACC, including last year when they finished 9-8 overall and 8-3 to place third in conference play before being upset by No. 6 seed Concordia Wisconsin in the NACC Tournament. Shane Reid is in his seventh year coaching the Engineers and has a won two-thirds of his matches with a 96-48 record, including 60-14 in NACC play.
Another schedule casualty Friday: Lakeland has seen more than its share of wheeling and dealing and shifting in its schedule this season, and another came when the match against Olivet (Mich.) that was scheduled for Friday was canceled due to the Comets being shorthanded on players. Even with the cancellation, the Muskies still have their next four matches all at home. The schedule now is heavy on NACC matches the rest of the way as well, and unless more matches are added to the schedule the only non-conference match remaining is a home date with UC Santa Cruz March 24.
