Series history:Â 41st meeting, Lakeland leads 29-11
The series between Lakeland and Concordia Chicago dates all the way back to 1950. The Muskies have won 17 of the last 19 meetings, but the Cougars took the most recent one, winning 87-82 down in River Forest, Ill., Jan. 5 to snap a 7-game losing streak to Lakeland. The Muskies' last win in the series was a 92-76 victory at CUC Feb. 4, 2020, which capped a season sweep that also included an 89-76 win at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium Dec. 4, 2019. The series included a 43-year break from 1957 to 2000, and the two schools have met 27 times since 2000, with the Muskies winning 22.
Lakeland last time out: Lost to Rockford 87-73 Saturday
The Muskies ran out of gas against the Regents, who went on a 30-7 run in the game's late stages to take over what was a close game most of the way. Lakeland led 58-56 with just over 10 minutes to play and appeared in good position coming down the stretch, but Rockford went on a 12-0 run and then added another 12-2 run late to lead by as much as 21. The Muskies shot 44.4% but made just 9 of 20 from the free throw line and were outrebounded 52-32.
Aiden Polzin scored 19 points and
Cam Jaeger scored 14, but the Regents shot 55.6% in the second half and finished the game with a huge 61-19 advantage in bench points.Â
Concordia last time out: Lost at Illinois Tech 71-53 Monday
The Cougars never could get going in a loss to the Scarlet Hawks Monday night. IIT never trailed in the game, shot 63.3% in the first half to take a 48-19 lead into halftime and finished the game shooting 55.8%. Concordia shot just 33.9%, its second-lowest number of the season, and trailed by double digits for the final 30 minutes. Jordan Matthews and Izak Ruddell scored 13 points each to lead the Cougars.
About the Cougars: Concordia had won eight of nine before its loss to Illinois Tech and still is in good position to land a home game in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament. CUC enters the night fifth in the conference standings and even with an outside shot at a top-3 finish and a bye in the first round of the tourney. Third-year coach Steve Kollar also has in sight the Cougars' first winning record since 2009-10, and they hold one of the signature wins of the entire NCAA Division III season, having won at then-No. 2-ranked Illinois Wesleyan in overtime Jan. 29.
Recapping the first meeting: The Muskies nearly rallied from a 12-point deficit with just over two minutes left, getting two chances to tie in the final 30 seconds before Concordia closed the game out. The Cougars went on a 32-9 run in the second half, turning Lakeland's 55-47 lead into a 79-64 deficit for the Muskies with just over four minutes to play. CUC finished shooting 50%, including 10 of 23 from three-point range, and was led by Jordan Matthews with 22 points while Liam Cameron added 19 points off the bench.
Cam Jaeger led Lakeland with 20 points and
Aiden Polzin added 19 as the Muskies shot 43.3% and made 11 of 31 from three-point range.
