Muskies stay hot on spring break with 11-3 win over Penn State-Altoona

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Lakeland University baseball team scored five runs in the first two innings and stayed in control the rest of the way for another win, defeating Penn State University-Altoona 11-3 Thursday morning at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

The Muskies stayed hot on their spring break trip, winning for the seventh time in eight games and improving to 7-3 overall with one game left in Florida. Lakeland is off to its best 10-game start to the season in ten years, since starting 7-3 in 2012, including a 6-3 record on its spring break trip that year.

The Muskies scored in five different innings, making good use of their 11 hits and also making the Lions pay for mistakes early. Lakeland took advantage of a pair of wild pitches to manufacture a run in the first inning for a 1-0 lead, and then capitalized on two errors to score three unearned runs as part of a four-run second inning.

OakLee Spens (So.-Burbank, Calif.) hit an RBI ground out in the first inning to get the Muskies on the board, and Lakeland added runs in the second on a balk, a sacrifice bunt by Collin Schutz (Sr.-Saint Amant, La.) resulting in an error to score two runs, and a run-scoring single by Nathan Hemmerling (Jr.-Riverside, Calif.).

Penn State-Altoona scored twice in the bottom of the third off Muskies starter Peyton Domangue (So.-Thibodaux, La.), but Lakeland bounced back with three more runs in the fifth. Nine hitters went to the plate and Tyler LaMack (So.-Pewaukee, Wis.), Hunter Frisk (Jr.-Manteca, Calif.) and Zak Keegan (Fr.-Frankfort, Ill.) all singled in runs, with Keegan's giving the Muskies an 8-2 lead.

LaMack added his first home run of the season in the sixth, a solo homer as part of his fourth three-hit day of the trip. Lakeland added two more runs in the eighth with Frisk delivering a bases-loaded two-run single down the right field line to score Spens and Hemmerling.

The Muskies received plenty solid pitching to protect the lead throughout. Domangue went seven innings, allowing nine hits and three runs with four strikeouts and one walk to get his first win of the season. Cole Dixon (Fr.-Newark, Calif.) and Andrew Erbstoesser (Jr.-Union, Ill.) both pitched scoreless innings in relief, including Dixon striking out a pair in the eighth.

Hemmerling and Frisk both joined LaMack in posting three-hit days, including Hemmerling scoring twice and Frisk driving in three runs total. The Muskies also continued to play largely solid defense, committing one error for their 11th error in ten games.

Lakeland closes out its spring break trip on Saturday when it faces the Vassar (N.Y.) College Brewers at 8:45 a.m. Central time, 9:45 a.m. in Florida.
