MEQUON, Wis. –
Cameron Ekum (
Sr.-Wales, Wis.) set a new school varsity single-season record for service aces but the Lakeland University men's volleyball team was defeated by Concordia University Wisconsin in three sets Wednesday night at the R. John Buuck Fieldhouse.
The Muskies were defeated by a 25-21, 25-19, 25-22 score in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match. Lakeland lost its third straight match and dropped to 6-9 overall and 3-7 in the NACC while Concordia improved to 9-9 overall and 5-3 in conference.
Ekum recorded his 41st service ace of the season to eclipse the record of 40 aces set by
Tyler Boyce in 2014, the Muskies' first varsity season of men's volleyball. He tied the record with an ace midway through the second set and claimed the record for all his own with the initial service to start the third set.
Lakeland posted one of its better hitting performances of the season but still played from behind most of the match against an even-hotter CUW team. The Muskies hit .202 for the match with 33 kills and 15 errors in 89 attack attempts, but the Falcons finished with 43 kills and just eight errors in 93 swings for a robust .376 hitting percentage.
Concordia led for almost the entirety of the first set and most of the second, pulling ahead for good shortly after Lakeland had tied at 5-5 after a Falcons service error. The Muskies came out strong in the third set and built an 11-7 lead after a kill by Ekum, but CUW followed with six straight points. Lakeland would be in trail mode the rest of the set, though a
Ben Busalacchi (
So.-Muskego, Wis.) service ace cut the deficit to 22-21 late before the Falcons closed with three of the final four points.
Ekum came close to a triple-double in leading the team with 12 kills with just one error in 20 attackes (.550 hitting percentage) plus 18 assists. He also added eight digs.
Matt Misheck (
Sr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) also added nine kills and six digs.
Martin Carrillo (
Jr.-Mundelein, Ill.) added 13 assists and
Alex Burgos (
Jr.-Salem, Wis.) led the team with a career-high nine digs.
James Althoff led Concordia with 15 kills and Spencer Herman added 11 kills. Logan Kebisek posted 39 assists and Herman added a match-high 13 digs.
The Muskies are right back in action Thursday night when they host the University of California-Santa Cruz for a non-conference match at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
