DAVENPORT, Fla. –
Tyler LaMack (
So.-Pewaukee, Wis.) drove in a career-high five runs and
Nathan Hemmerling (
Jr.-Riverside, Calif.) and
Andrew Erbstoesser (
Jr.-Union, Ill.) combined on a six-hit shutout as the Lakeland University baseball team blanked Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) 7-0 Wednesday morning.
The Muskies registered one of the most impressive wins of their spring break yet, handing the Tigers just their second loss in ten games. Lakeland also clinched a winning record at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, moving to 6-3 on the season with two games left in Florida.
LaMack went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a three-run double in the fourth inning to stake the Muskies to an early 6-0 lead. He continued a scorching-hot start to the season in which he has worn out opposing pitchers, batting .577 with 15 hits, seven doubles and 17 runs batted in over Lakeland's first nine games.
LaMack delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning to get the Muskies on the board, scoring Hemmerling with the first two runs in the inning.
Austin Palmer (
Fr.-Oro Valley, Ariz.) later added a bases-loaded walk to score
Jack Banks (
Sr.-Mountain View, Calif.) for a 2-0 lead off RIT starter Collin Reformat.
Lakeland blew the game open in the sixth inning with four runs, doing all of its work with two out. Reformat retired the first two batters before
Kaylab Owings (
So.-Bagdad, Ariz.) singled,
Collin Schutz (
Sr.-Saint Amant, La.) walked and Hemmerling singled on the infield to load the bases. Banks walked to bring in one run and LaMack followed with a double to left field to clear the bases, giving the Muskies a 6-0 lead and chase Reformat from the game.
Lakeland cruised the rest of the way as Hemmerling kept the Tigers at bay, playing in traffic at times and scattering six hits and three walks but recovering to get critical outs to throw 7 1/3 scoreless innings and earn the win.
RIT stranded 11 runners in the game, including loading the bases with two in the first inning and stranding two runners each in the second, fourth and fifth innings. The Tigers also put two on with none out in the fourth, but Hemmerling recovered to strike out the side for three of his eight strikeouts.
Erbstoesser came on in the eighth inning and finished the game with 1 2/3 hitless innings, including retiring the final five batters. LaMack added one more RBI in the eighth, singling with two outs to score Hemmerling, who also finished with two hits, a walk and three runs scored in five plate appearances.
