MEQUON, Wis. –
Nathan Hemmerling (
Jr.-Riverside, Calif.) pitched another gem and became the second player in Lakeland University baseball history to top 200 career strikeouts but the Muskies dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Milwaukee School of Engineering at home Sunday afternoon.
MSOE won a 2-0 pitchers' duel in the first game and then rolled to a 19-8 win in the second game to complete the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference sweep. Lakeland's struggles continued with a fifth straight loss putting the team at 16-18 overall (6-14 NACC) and below the .500 mark overall for the first time since early March.
The Muskies lost the opener despite another outstanding outing by Hemmerling. The righthander pitched 8 1/3 innings and allowed three hits and two unearned runs with 13 strikeouts, his third straight start and fourth time this season striking out at least 11 in a game.
Hemmerling's 13 K's give him 208 strikeouts for his four-year Lakeland career, the second-most ever by a Muskies pitcher. He joins Steve Plucinski (311 strikeouts from 2002-04) as the only two players to top 200 strikeouts in program history.
For all of Hemmerling's excellence on Sunday, though, MSOE (20-15 overall, 15-5 NACC) hurler Tyler Gronert was just as dominant. Gronert pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits with 12 strikeouts, two walks and three hit batters.
The only two runs to score in the game both were unearned, including the Raiders scoring in the first inning after a two-out error. MSOE added a second run in the top of the seventh, as a leadoff walk eventually came around to score after a Muskies throwing error on the infield.
Lakeland's best opportunities to score came in the first and sixth innings. The Muskies took advantage of a pair of hit batters and a walk to load the bases with two outs in the first before Gronert got
Zak Keegan (Fr.-Frankfort, Ill.) to fly out to center field. Another opportunity came up in the sixth when
Jack Banks (
Sr.-Mountain View, Calif.) singled and
Tyler LaMack (
So.-Pewaukee, Wis.) walked to lead off the inning, but that was as far as they would get as a pair of strikeouts sandwiched a line out to quickly end the threat.
While pitching dominated the first game, MSOE's offense exploded in the second game. The Raiders registered 23 hits and scored in seven of the eight innings played, starting with six runs in the second inning.
Brandon Beauchamp went 3-for-5 with five runs batted in and Blake Hall and Kyle Labedz both added four hits each. MSOE also pulled away again after Lakeland cut the deficit down to 8-6 in the fourth inning, including ten runs combined over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Collin Schutz (
Sr.-Saint Amant, La.) doubled to drive in a run as part of a three-run second inning and
Kellen Hodges (
So.-Littleton, Colo.) and Hemmerling both singled in runs and
Tyler LaMack (
So.-Pewaukee, Wis.) added a run-scoring ground out to get the Muskies within two in the fourth. Keegan finished with two hits and Hodges went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Lakeland closes out its season this coming weekend, starting with a trip to face Edgewood College for two games starting at 1 p.m. on Friday.
