Muskies struggle again in falling twice to Eagles

VERONA, Wis. – The Lakeland University baseball team struggled to generate offense in falling to Edgewood College twice Friday afternoon at Stampfl Field.

The Eagles prevailed by scores of 3-0 and 8-1 in the Muskies' second-to-last Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader of the season. Lakeland's late season struggles continued with a seventh straight loss dropping the team to 16-20 overall and 6-14 in the NACC with its final games tomorrow at home against Wisconsin Lutheran College.

The Muskies were held to just nine hits over the two games, including four hits in the low-scoring first game. Edgewood (19-19 overall, 10-12 NACC) pitcher Kyle Semrad threw a complete-game shutout, striking out eight and walking three and only once allowing a runner past second base.

Lakeland's best chance to score came in the top of the eighth. Trailing 2-0 with two outs in the inning, Collin Schutz (Sr.-Saint Amant, La.) singled and stole second, Noah Leopold (Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) walked and then Tyler LaMack (So.-Pewaukee, Wis.) reached on an error. Schutz came around third and tried to score but was thrown out to end the inning.

Brody Fay (Fr.-Surprise, Ariz.) pitched seven innings and allowed ten hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in defeat. Gio Ramirez (Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) allowed two hits and an unearned run with a strikeout in one inning of relief.

The Muskies scored first in the second game with a run in the opening inning. Nathan Hemmerling (Jr.-Riverside, Calif.) walked to lead off and then moved all the way to third after a sacrifice by Leopold. Hemmerling then came home when LaMack reached on an error, giving Lakeland a 1-0 lead.

The margin was short-lived as the Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the first and then took the lead with a run in the second on an RBI single by Ryan Ambrosy. Edgewood would then add on two more runs in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings, while the Muskies were mostly stymied by Eagles pitcher Joseph Kalafut, who allowed four hits and an unearned run in eight innings with eight strikeouts.

Kaylab Owings (So.-Bagdad, Ariz.) finished with two hits in the second game while Leopold and LaMack also both finished with two hits on the day. Peyton Domangue (So.-Thibodaux, La.) took the loss in the second game, allowing nine hits and six runs (two earned) in seven innings before Jack Banks (Sr.-Mountain View, Calif.) finished up the final inning.

Lakeland closes its season Saturday with Senior Day against Wisconsin Lutheran starting at noon.
