Hemmerling, Muskies dominate Senior Day, graduation day opener in splitting with WLC

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Nathan Hemmerling (Sr.-Riverside, Calif.) dominated on the mound one final time in a Lakeland University baseball uniform and the Muskies closed out their season splitting a doubleheader with Wisconsin Lutheran College Saturday afternoon.

The Muskies steamrolled to a 15-0 win in seven innings in the first game. Wisconsin Lutheran rallied for a 15-9 victory in the second game, ending Lakeland's season with a 17-21 overall record and a 7-17 mark in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

A spring full of rain and gloomy weather at last gave way to sunshine and pleasant temperatures for Senior Day as well as Lakeland's 160th commencement ceremonies, and seven Muskies seniors were recognized before the doubleheader and their final games with the team. Six also joined in a presentation of diploma covers by Lakeland president Beth Borgen in between games to players who would be competing while the school's undergraduate graduation ceremony took place during the second game.

One of the best pitchers in program history, Hemmerling saved some of his best for last against the Warriors (13-23 overall, 8-16 NACC) in the first game. In six shutout innings he allowed two hits and struck out 12, his fourth straight game with at least 11 strikeouts.

Hemmerling struck out the side in the first, third and fifth innings and retired the final ten hitters he faced in overpowering fashion. He got stronger as the game went on, striking out seven of the final eight hitters he faced in an 83-pitch outing before departing after six innings in the lopsided affair.

Hemmerling also helped his own cause by going 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in and two runs scored and received plenty of help as the Muskies scored all 15 of their runs in the first five innings. Lakeland scored five times in the first inning with Hemmerling's RBI single starting the scoring. Hunter Frisk (Jr.-Manteca, Calif.) also doubled in a run, Zak Keegan (Fr.-Frankfort, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly and Collin Schutz (Sr.-Saint Amant, La.) added a two-run single.

The Muskies continued to pour it on with two more runs in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Frisk singled in another run, Jack Banks (Sr.-Mountain View, Calif.) hit a two-run double and Keegan, Hemmerling, Kaylab Owings (So.-Bagdad, Ariz.), Tyler LaMack (So.-Pewaukee, Wis.) and Austin Palmer (Fr.-Oro Valley, Ariz.) also all singled in runs. Leadoff hitter Noah Leopold (Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) also scored three runs and drove in one with a bases-loaded walk while getting on base three times.

Lakeland also got off to a big start in the second game only to see Wisconsin Lutheran warm up at the plate as the game went on. The Muskies scored eight times in the first inning, with Hemmerling delivering the biggest blow with a three-run homer. Keegan also singled to drive in a run and both Schutz and Leopold walked with the bases loaded.

An 8-1 lead would dissipate quickly, with the Warriors scoring in each of the first six innings. A three-run third brought WLC within 8-6, and a five-run fifth inning game the guests the lead for good at 13-9. Ryan Dominick went 5-for-6 and drove in four runs and Lutheran finished with 20 hits in the second game against six Muskies pitchers.

Lakeland, meanwhile, would go cold at the plate as the day went on. Warriors pitcher Andrew Muffler came on in the first inning before WLC had even recorded an out, and he would go seven innings, allowing just four hits and two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts.

Frisk went 3-for-4 in the second game, and he and Hemmerling both posted five hits each on the day. Banks also added three hits plus five RBIs. The Muskies also were hurt by four errors in the second game, and Cole Dixon (Fr.-Newark, Calif.) took the loss in relief, allowing three hits and five runs (one earned).

Banks, Frisk, Hemmerling, Dylan Penny (Sr.-River Falls, Wis.), Jackson Pahl (Sr.-Rockford, Ill.), Kyle Wallace (Sr.-Willard, Mo.) and Sam Wright (Sr.-Geneva, Ill.) all were honored before the first game, and all seven seniors played in the twinbill, including Wallace and Wright both recording strikeouts in relief appearances.

Lakeland improved its win total for a second straight season, and the 17 wins are the tied with the 2012 squad for the program's most since winning 21 games in 2010.
