PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University women's tennis team got a chance to measure up against one of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's top teams and saw encouraging signs when it faced Edgewood College Saturday at the courts of Plymouth High School.

The Muskies fell by a 9-0 count in their first conference dual of the season. Lakeland fell to Edgewood team that won the NACC regular season title a year ago and has won the last four regular season crowns while winning 40 consecutive NACC duals in the regular season.

The Muskies (1-2 overall) nearly picked up a win at No. 1 singles, though, as freshman Olivia Heling (West Bend, Wis.) won her first set against Cecile Fuchs before losing the final two sets. Fuchs rallied for a 3-6, 6-0, 10-3 win in the closest match of the day.

Lakeland also had competitive sets in several other singles matches. Kassidee Webb (Fr.-Castroville, Texas) won three games in the first set before falling to Jewel Lindwall 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Clare Kelnhofer (So.-Brandon, Wis.) also was defeated 6-0, 6-3 by Christina Ekkela at No. 6 singles.

The Eagles (1-3 overall, 1-0 NACC) were more dominant in doubles matches, losing just two games over three matches. The Muskies still finished winning 18 games on the day, including 16 games in singles play, well above the team's eight games won in singles against Edgewood in the meeting last year.

Lakeland's dual scheduled for Sunday against Wisconsin Lutheran College has been postponed due to rain. The Muskies' next scheduled match is Saturday, Sept. 17 against Alverno College at 10 a.m. at Plymouth High School.
