DE PERE, Wis. – Abby Thompson scored three times for St. Norbert College and the Lakeland University women's soccer team hung close for a while before falling 7-1 in its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener Wednesday night at Schneider Stadium.
The Muskies were within a goal late in the first half before the Green Knights scored three goals in a five-minute stretch sandwiched around the halftime break. Lakeland dropped to 3-3 overall with its second straight loss while St. Norbert improved to 2-2 overall.
The Muskies scored late in the first half when
Alondra Reyes (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) tallied in the 41st minute, her fifth goal of the season coming unassisted and drawing Lakeland within 2-1. The chance to go into halftime down a goal went away just 22 seconds later, though, when a breakaway resulted in Haley Leadingham scoring to give SNC a 3-1 lead it would to the half.
St. Norbert then scored two goals just 27 seconds apart soon after the halftime break. Thompson scored her second goal of the match at 47:40 for a 4-1 lead, and the hosts were awarded a penalty kick just 27 seconds later, which Mallory Names converted for a four-goal lead. Leadingham and Thompson both added goals later in the half to close out the scoring.
St. Norbert finished with a 27-3 advantage in shot attempts, with
Haley Rich (
Sr.-West Chicago, Ill.) making 11 saves in goal for Lakeland. Reyes accounted for two shots for the Muskies and
Hanna Brouch (
So.-Kaukauna, Wis.) added the other shot.
Lakeland is home for the second time this season on Saturday when it hosts Dominican University for a 2:30 p.m. start at Taylor Field.
