EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Lakeland University women's volleyball team ran into four straight hot-hitting opponents and came up empty in its trip to the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Muskies went 0-4 in the two-day tourney held Friday and Saturday. Lakeland lost to St. Catherine (Minn.) University 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 in its opener Friday before also falling to UW-Stout 20-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-9. The Muskies then fell to the host school and nationally ranked UW-Eau Claire 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 before concluding with a four-set loss to the College of St. Benedict (Minn.) 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 25-15 to drop to 4-9 this season.
All four Lakeland opponents were very efficient on the attack, with St. Benedict's .297 hitting percentage the lowest of the four opponents. The other three hit at least .330 highlighted by St. Catherine hitting .351 in the opener Friday.
Katie Metzler (
Jr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) received all-tournament honors for the Muskies, finishing with 31 kills over four matches including a high of 13 against St. Benedict.
Hailey DeGrave (
Jr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) paced Lakeland with 32 kills and
Kelly Swope (
Jr.-Heyworth, Ill.) Also added 30 kills plus 17 digs on the weekend.
Maeve Sullivan (
Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) posted 53 digs and seven service aces and
Emily Duchow (
Sr.-Potter, Wis.) handled setting duties with 104 assists, including 38 assists against St. Benedict.
Lakeland is home for just the second time this season when it hosts Milwaukee School of Engineering Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
