Lakeland scores even dozen to roll past Mount Mary in women’s soccer opener

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Alondra Reyes (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) scored four goals and eight different players scored at least one goal each as the Lakeland University women's soccer team opened its campaign with a 12-0 win over Mount Mary University Thursday afternoon.

The Muskies put up their biggest scoring outburst in ten years, tied for the most goals by a Lakeland team in a game in 20 years and tied the mark for the second-most goals in a match in program history.

Lakeland scored seven times in the first half, including a hat track by Reyes in the first 35 minutes alone. Riley Jahnke (Sr.-Howards Grove, Wis.) also scored her first two career goals in the second half as the Muskies dominated possession and finished with a 48-8 advantage in shot attempts.

The Muskies needed just over 14 minutes to get on the board for the first time, when Hanna Brouch (So.-Kaukauna, Wis.) scored with 30 minutes, 45 seconds left in the first half for a 1-0 lead. Reyes then scored her first goal in the 25th minute with an assist from Jenna Caterino (So.-Stanton, Mich.), and the goals started coming quickly after that. Caterino scored just 19 seconds later with an assist from Abby Runkel (So.-Burlington, Wis.) and Reyes then added goals in the 29th and 35th minutes, the latter with an assist from Faith Turley (Jr.-Lincoln, Ill.).

Lakeland wasn't done in the first half, as freshman Janae Kilsdonk (Appleton, Wis.) scored at 35:16 of the match to make it 6-0. Paige Couwenhoven (Truckee, Calif.) then got on the board with her first collegiate goal in the 40th minute with an assist from fellow freshman Allison Solberg Kieler (Ridgeway, Wis.) to make it 7-0 at halftime.

The Muskies scored again 5 1/2 minutes into the second half when Jahnke scored her first career goal. Reyes then scored her fourth goal in the 58th minute for a 9-0 lead, and Lakeland added three more goals in the final 15 minutes. Lola D'Acquisto (Fr.-Cudahy, Wis.) scored her first collegiate goal, Marlen Reyes (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) joined twin sister Alondra in the scoring column with a goal assisted on by Caterino in the 79th minute, and Jahnke added her second goal to close the scoring.

Haley Rich (Sr.-West Chicago, Ill.) started in goal and made three saves in the first half. Turley and Hailey Hawe (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) split time in the second half, with Turley making three saves in 27:39 and Hawe adding one save in just over 17 minutes.

The 12 goals are the most for Lakeland since a 12-0 win over Robert Morris-Lake County (Ill.) in 2012. The Muskies also scored 12 on two other occasions. The record for most goals in a match was set Sept. 20, 2002, with 14 goals in a shutout win over Concordia University Chicago.

Lakeland continues a busy start to its season with four matches in six days including a pair this weekend. The Muskies head north to face Northland College at noon on Saturday in Ashland, then travel to the Copper Country in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to face Finlandia University Sunday at 2 p.m.
