LumberJills edge Muskies 1-0 in opener of northern swing

ASHLAND, Wis. – Northland College's Izzy Haverkampf scored in the 42nd minute and the Lakeland University women's soccer team opened a weekend road trip north with a narrow 1-0 loss Saturday afternoon.

Haverkampf scored at 41:08 of the match, getting behind the defense to chase down a through pass by Liberty Dickerson and leading to a breakaway goal tapped in under Muskies goalkeeper Haley Rich (Sr.-West Chicago, Ill.). The score would hold the rest of the way as Lakeland dropped to 1-1 overall on the young season while Northland improved to 1-1.

The Muskies had most of the opportunities in the first 45 minutes, generating six of their eight shots and all four shots on goal. The first opportunity came in the 13th minute, when Marlen Reyes (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) turned in the box but didn't get all of a shot on goal. The best chance came in the 20th minute when Hanna Brouch (So.-Kaukauna, Wis.) carried a pass on the left sideline down into the penalty area before her shot from 10 yards out was deflected away by Northland keeper Elizabeth Lough.

Lakeland applied pressure midway through the second half that resulted in a pair of corner kicks, one getting through the defense to Jadyn Huncosky (Fr.-Hustisford, Wis.), whose shot from 15 yards out went wide right. The Muskies would not get another shot on goal, and Rich made a pair of saves in the final three minutes to keep the score 1-0.

Alondra Reyes (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) led Lakeland with three shot attempts and Reyes and Brouch added two shots each. Rich made six saves in goal while Lough made four saves for the shutout for the LumberJills.

The Muskies play again Sunday, traveling to Hancock, Mich., to face Finlandia University at 2 p.m.
