RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Lakeland University women's soccer team fell into a big hole early and dropped its sixth straight match with a 5-0 loss at Concordia University Chicago Wednesday afternoon at Concordia Stadium.
The Muskies went down 3-0 less than 20 minutes into the match, the earliest three-goal deficit of the season and just the third time Lakeland has allowed three goals in the first half in ten games. Lakeland never recovered and dropped to 3-7 overall and is now 0-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Cougars (1-4-3 overall, 1-3-1 NACC) scored the first goal less than six minutes into the game shortly after a corner kick. The ball rattled around in front of the goal off a number of players, including
Jenna Caterino (
So.-Stanton, Mich.) and
Ellie Rau (
Jr.-West Allis, Wis.) both attempting to poke the ball out through traffic, but Hannah Bowers eventually got to the ball and put the ball into the net inside the right corner for a 1-0 lead.
Concordia then scored twice in a span of 1 minute, 37 seconds to take full control. Allie Brown assisted as Medelin Loza scored at 17:28 of the match into the bottom right corner of the net, and Brown then scored into the top left over goalkeeper
Haley Rich (
Sr.-West Chicago, Ill.) in the 20th minute to put the Cougars up 3-0.
The score would stay that way until halftime as CUC dominated the first half with a 20-1 advantage in shot attempts. The lone shot came on a free kick by
Aimee Hild (
Jr.-Plano, Ill.) that got through to goalkeeper Kassie Silenzi on two bounces for an easy save in the 15th minute.
The Muskies generated several chances in the first minutes after halftime, including a shot wide by
Faith Turley (
Jr.-Lincoln, Ill.), a shot on goal by
Marlen Reyes (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and another shot attempt by
Gwynn Manteufel (
So.-Kewaskum, Wis.) blocked and leading to a corner kick. The Cougars added on less than ten minutes into the second half, though, with Jordyn Gosell heading in a corner kick by Loza in the 55th minute to make it 4-0.
Concordia added one more goal in the 79th minute as Pamela Saldivar buried a penalty kick into the bottom right corner after a trip was called on the end line and on the edge of the keeper's area.
The Cougars finished with a 31-4 advantage in shot attempts. Rich made ten saves in goal for the Muskies while three goalkeepers combined to make two saves for Concordia.
The Muskies are back home for their next game Saturday when they host Benedictine University at 11:30 a.m. at Taylor Field.
