Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Brouch scores early goal, Rich posts shutout as Lakeland tops Finlandia 1-0

HANCOCK, Mich. – Hanna Brouch (So.-Kaukauna, Wis.) scored an early goal and the Lakeland University women's soccer team made it stand up the rest of the way to earn its second win of the season, defeating Finlandia (Mich.) University 1-0 Sunday afternoon.

Haley Rich (Sr.-West Chicago, Ill.) made seven saves for her third collegiate shutout and the Muskies picked up their second non-conference win of the season. Lakeland has already tied its win total for the entire 2021 season, when it finished 2-15 overall.

The Muskies broke the ice in the 13th minute shortly after a corner kick. Faith Turley (Jr.-Lincoln, Ill.) delivered the service from the left corner that Finlandia goalkeeper Aspen Wallin knocked away. Alondra Reyes (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) chased down the loose ball right of goal and poked a pass through to Brouch, who was flanked by two defenders but had enough space to turn quickly and score from eight yards out.

Lakeland would get just one more shot the rest of the first half but still took a 1-0 lead into halftime. The second half would see both teams with opportunities. Finlandia's best came in the 87th minute when a rebound off a blocked shot gave Sam Linteo a chance that Rich stopped for her seventh and final save.

Finlandia outshot Lakeland 14-9 and posted a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks. Reyes attempted three shots with Turley and Jenna Catarino (So.-Stanton, Mich.) adding two shots each. Wallin made five saves for Finlandia, which dropped to 0-3 on the season.

The Muskies now get ready for their home opener Tuesday when they host Maranatha Baptist University for a 4 p.m. start at Taylor Field.
