HANCOCK, Mich. – The Lakeland University men's soccer team's second game of the season was much like its first a day earlier, as the Muskies started strong before finishing with a 1-1 tie against Finlandia (Mich.) University Sunday afternoon in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
It felt like the movie Groundhog Day for Lakeland with a second game in two days where the Muskies started strong and scored an early goal before seeing the opponent assert control in the second half and score a tying goal. With no overtimes in regular season matches this year per NCAA rules, Lakeland is now 0-0-2 after two matches, while Finlandia also is 0-0-2 on its season.
The Muskies' opening goal in Saturday's tie with Ripon came just over five minutes into the match; against Finlandia, the score came 6 1/2 minutes in.
Michael Barragan (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) crossed a high pass to
Michecadet Gethand (
Jr.-Jackson, Wis.) at the top of the penalty area. Gethand won the ball from two defenders and slipped a pass through to
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Cottage Grove, Wis.), who beat goalkeeper Jeremiah Amador from 10 yards out to score his first collegiate goal.
Lakeland carried that 1-0 lead to halftime, outshooting Finlandia 11-4 in the first 45 minutes and also getting awarded five corner kicks. The second half was a different story, with the Lions owning the first 20 minutes with an 8-0 advantage in shot attempts and six corner kicks.
Finlandia eventually finally broke through. Mohamed Koroma chased down a loose ball in the corner left of goal, then made a run on the end line before centering a pass through traffic into the box to Chinedu Ikem, whose left-footed shot from 10 yards beat goalkeeper
Carson Galla (
Jr.-Deerfield, Wis.) inside the left post.
The Muskies made a push in the final minutes, tilting the field and getting two terrific chances in the final minute. Gethand struck a shot with 53 seconds left that Finlandia keeper Jeremiah Amador stopped, and a transition in the last seconds gave Davis-Troller a one-on-one opportunity just before the clock hit zeroes, but his shot went wide and time expired.
Finlandia finished outshooting Lakeland 12-3 in the second half and 16-14 for the match, as well as finishing with a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks. Gethand and David-Troller both attempted three shots each.
Ben Taylor (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) played the first half in goal and made two saves before Galla made four saves in the second half.
The Muskies are back home Tuesday when they host Maranatha Baptist University at 6 p.m. at Taylor Field in the second game of a women's/men's doubleheader where the Lakeland women's team will host the Sabercats at 4 p.m.
