PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Michael Barragan (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) led a group of four players to score goals,
Michecadet Gethand (
Jr.-Jackson, Wis.) assisted on two scores and the Lakeland University men's soccer team earned its first win of the season by a 4-0 score over Maranatha Baptist University Tuesday night at Taylor Field.
The Muskies dominated play much of the night and were able to get plenty of players on the field, with 30 different players seeing time in the match. Lakeland followed up two ties over the weekend with a victory to stay undefeated through three matches at 1-0-2 overall.
The Muskies scored three times in the first half, including two goals just over four minutes apart in the first 15 minutes. The first came from Barragan, who was in the right position to run onto a rebound after a shot from straight on by Gethand in the 11th minute. Barragan got to the loose ball before Maranatha keeper Ian Balyo and blasted a shot right past the keeper from seven yards out for his first goal of the season.
Lakeland scored again in the 15th minute after an extended stretch deep in the Sabercats' end. The sequence ended when
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Fr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) hit a cross in front of the right post where
Suleiman Haji (
Jr.-Mankato, Minn.) made an acrobatic deflection right past Balyo for the goal and a 2-0 lead.
The Muskies scored a third goal with under seven minutes left in the first half when
Kidus Samson (
Jr.-San Francisco, Calif.) played a ball through from just past midfield to
Brahm Dell Adema (
Fr.-Plano, Texas) on the run. Dell Adema took one touch before hitting a perfectly placed shot on the ground just out of Balyo's reach and inside the left post for his first collegiate goal.
Lakeland added one more goal early in the second half when Gethand got free on a run at the left post, drawing Balyo to his side. Gethand hit a cross to
Cole Cederwall (
Fr.-Spring Valley, Calif.), who scored easily in the open net. The Muskies would substitute freely the rest of the match but still kept the pressure on most of the way and finished with a 19-5 advantage in shots with 12 different players attempting at least one shot.
Ben Taylor (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) started in goal and played into the second half before
Carson Galla (
Jr.-Deerfield, Wis.) and later
Lee Kellom (
So.-Michigan City, Ind.) came on. All three made one save each, including Kellom making a fully-extended save of a redirection by Robbie Lemon off a free kick in the 82nd minute to preserve the shutout.
Balyo made nine saves in goal for Maranatha Baptist, which dropped to 0-2 on the season. The Sabercats generated four of their five shots in the second half.
The Muskies next go on the road to face Beloit College on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
