MADISON, Wis. – Edgewood College shot out of the gates to a big early lead and the Lakeland University men's basketball team got off to an icy start in an 86-74 loss Saturday afternoon at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
The Muskies shot just 27.0% in the first half and spent the entire day playing catchup. Lakeland trimmed an 18-point first half deficit to seven early in the second half but eventually fell to drop to 9-7 overall and 3-6 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Eagles, just 1-15 coming in but with seven losses by seven points or less, earned their second win of the season behind efficient shooting team-wide and a massive game from big man Jake Schroeckenthaler. The 6-foot-5 senior scored 30 points and added 17 rebounds and four blocked shots, hitting 14 of 23 shots from the floor.
Schroeckenthaler scored nine points as Edgewood raced out to a 21-4 lead just over six minutes into the game. The Eagles made nine of their first 13 shots while Lakeland hit just 2 of 15 from the field in scoring just four points in the first 7:44.
Edgewood would lead by as much as 18 on two occasions in the first 20 minutes, and was ahead 41-25 after a three-pointer from the corner by Cade Ellingson with 11 seconds left in the period. The Muskies would take a bite out of that margin in the final three seconds, though.
Isaiah Hammond (
So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) was fouled and made two free throws, and then
Christian Knox (
Sr.-Ypsilanti, Mich.) came up with a backcourt steal and hit a three-pointer as time expired to make it 41-30.
Lakeland would close even further in the first 66 seconds of the second half. After a short jumper by Schroeckenthaler,
Aiden Polzin (
So.-Clintonville, Wis.) converted a three-point play, and after an Edgewood miss he drilled a three-pointer to get the Muskies within 43-36, their closest since the game's first three minutes.
Lakeland would get no closer, though, and Edgewood slowly started rebuilding the lead. Adam Baierl hit a jumper to make it 57-42 with 14:45 left, and the margin swelled to 72-52 after another three by Ellingson with 8:15 left. Despite hitting 17 of 35 (48.6%) of their shots in the second half, the Muskies would get no closer the rest of the way than the final score after a layup by Knox in the final second.
Polzin finished with 16 points, Knox scored 15 and
Caleb Fuller (
Jr.-Oshkosh, Wis.) added 13 points.
Kai Buliox (
So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds and
Robby Michael (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) finished with four assists. Lakeland finished shooting 37.5% (27 of 72), including 8 of 22 from three-point range (36.4%) and 12 of 19 from the foul line (63.2%).
Baierl also scored 17 points and added seven rebounds for Edgewood, which finished shooting 47.9% (35 of 73) and outrebounded Lakeland 51-39.
The Muskies are on the road again Tuesday when they travel to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
