Series history: Lakeland and Marian have been meeting in men's soccer regularly since 1983, first as combatants in the Lake Michigan Conference and now in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Complete series records are unavailable, but the Sabres hold a 30-11-3 lead in the series since 1987. Marian won last year's matchup, defeating the Muskies 4-1 a year ago this week in Fond du Lac. Lakeland won the previous meeting two years ago this week here at Taylor Field, with a 3-1 victory as Michecadet Gethand scored twice, including his second goal in the 58th minute breaking a 1-1 tie. That snapped a five-game Sabres winning streak in the series. Marian won what is believed to be the first ever meeting between the schools in 1983, posting a 3-0 win on Sept. 20, 1983.

Lakeland last time out: Won at Edgewood 1-0 Saturday
The Muskies went almost to the wire before scoring the winning goal for a big road victory. Rafael Romero scored with 51 seconds left in the match, his first collegiate goal coming after cleaning up a misplay after a free kick from Joseph Reyes from past midfield in the final minute. Zach Heiman made four saves for his second straight shutout and Lakeland won its second straight NACC match and stayed alive in the chase for a spot in the eight-team NACC Tournament. The Muskies now also begin a busy final week of the regular season that includes four games in eight days, but all four games at home after playing just three of their first 14 games at home.

Marian last time out: Lost at Benedictine 2-1 Saturday
The Sabres saw a lead slip away late, first as the Eagles tied it in the 78th minute and then when Benedictine scored what proved to be the winning goal with just 1:42 left in the match. Marian took an early lead on a goal by Giuliano Corazzina less than nine minutes into the game, and it held up until well into the second half. The Sabres lost a man after a red card with less than eight minutes left, though, and the Eagles took advantage to send Marian to its fourth tie or loss by a goal or less in NACC play.

NACC tourney hopes: This is a big week for Lakeland, which could put itself in very good position for a spot in the conference tournament with a couple wins. The Muskies enter today 11th of 13 teams in the NACC standings with nine points from a 3-6 record, but also are just four points out of sixth place and two points out of seventh place. Positions 7-through-11 in the standings are separated by just two points, and Lakeland faces current 12th-place Marian plus No. 6 Rockford this week, plus seventh-place Concordia Wisconsin next Wednesday at home in the regular season finale.
