The Lakeland University men's soccer team has found out its NACC Tournament quarterfinal opponent and will travel to face Milwaukee School of Engineering for a noon kickoff Sunday at MSOE's Viets Field.
With the Muskies the lone NACC team not in action on the final day of conference regular season play, Lakeland had to wait for Wednesday's results to find out its opponent. The Muskies wound up with the No. 6 seed in the eight-team tournament, dropping down one spot in the standings after Benedictine University moved past Lakeland. The Eagles (5-1-6 NACC, 21 points) surprised conference runner-up Aurora University 2-1 on Wednesday, meaning the Muskies (11-5-4 overall, 5-3-4 NACC, 19 points) are matched up with MSOE, which is the No. 3 seed in the tourney with an 8-1-3 mark in the conference regular season.
The Raiders edged the Muskies 3-2 in the teams' regular season meeting two weeks earlier in a terrific match on Oct. 14 at Lakeland.
Aaron Cortez (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) and
Woodlens Frederic (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) scored goals for the Muskies, Cortez first to open the scoring early and Frederic in the second half to tie the game at 2-2. MSOE scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 62nd minute and held on as Lakeland challenged in the final minutes even while playing the final six minutes down a man after a red card.
The Muskies are in the NACC Tournament for the first time since 2009, when also as a sixth seed Lakeland was defeated by Edgewood University 3-1 in the first round. Lakeland is 0-3 all-time in the NACC tourney, also losing in the first round in 2007 and 2008.
The Muskies enter the postseason on a down note, winless in their last five matches with a 0-3-2 record. Lakeland tied Dominican University and Concordia University Wisconsin in that span, lost to MSOE and St. Norbert College, and in its regular season finale was defeated by Ripon College 4-0 on Wednesday. The Muskies and Red Hawks finished even with 13 shots each, but Ripon scored the first goal with just over six minutes left in the first half and then scored three times in a span of 8:32 midway through the second half.
Lakeland still has had the best regular season in program history, with its 11 wins setting a school record and breaking the previous mark of nine wins set in 1994. The Muskies are searching for their first conference tournament win since defeating Maranatha Baptist University 4-0 in the 2005 Lake Michigan Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
