PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University women's volleyball team extended its season-best winning streak to five matches, rolling past Alverno College in four sets Thursday night in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
The Muskies dominated the first two sets, hit a brief air pocket in the third set but came back up to speed in the fourth to finish a 25-14, 25-11, 21-25, 25-14 victory. With the win Lakeland is over the .500 mark overall for the first time this season at 11-10 and also improved to 6-3 in the NACC.
The Muskies stayed hot on the attack for the third straight match, hitting a season-best .341 with 63 kills and just 16 errors in 138 attack attempts. Their attack percentage blew away their previous best this season of a .239 mark against Wheaton (Ill.) College in the second match of the season Sept. 2.
Kelly Swope (
Sr.-Heyworth, Ill.) and
Susana Stevens (
Jr.-Las Cruces, N.M.) both totaled 16 kills each, including Swope setting a career high while hitting. 448 with only three errors in 29 attacks.
Katie Metzler (
Sr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) also posted 10 kills and
Isabella Westerholm (
Jr.-Prior Lake, Minn.) added eight kills in 12 attacks and a .583 hitting percentage.
Lakeland never trailed and was only as much as tied twice over the three sets it went ahead to win. The Inferno (1-17 overall, 0-9 NACC) briefly surged in the third set, scoring eight straight points to take a 10-2 lead and holding a comfortable lead the rest of the set. The Muskies responded by quickly jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth, and then gradually pulling away after a brief Alverno rally, finishing the set on a 17-7 run.
Maeve Sullivan (
Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) finished with 17 digs and Swope added 16 digs.
Katelyn Kitsembel (
So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) also posted 13 digs plus three service aces.
Roseily Carrasquillo (
Jr.-Yabucoa, Puerto Rico) also set a career high with 33 assists and added eight digs.
Rolin West led Alverno with a match-high 21 kills. Selena Upshur added 17 digs plus seven kills and Breanna Flannery totaled 16 digs.
The Muskies are on the road again Saturday to take on Rockford University at noon in Rockford, Ill.
