PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Mikayla Belasco (
Fr.-Muskegon, Mich.) scored one goal and assisted on another and the Lakeland University women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 4-1 win over Rockford University Saturday afternoon at a damp Taylor Field.
The Muskies hit several milestones in improving to 6-11 overall and 3-9 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with one match left in their season. Lakeland's six overall wins are its most since 2018 and tied for its most since winning 10 matches in 2006. The three conference victories are also the Muskies' most in 12 years, since winning four NACC contests in 2011.
Lakeland honored five seniors at halftime, with
Aimee Hild (
Plano, Ill.),
Ellie Rau (
West Allis, Wis.),
Alondra Reyes (
Milwaukee, Wis.),
Marlen Reyes (
Milwaukee, Wis.) and
Faith Turley (
Lincoln, Ill.) all playing their final home games, and the Muskies were in control much of the afternoon, save for a brief stretch at the start of the second half.
Belasco opened the scoring 15 minutes, 23 seconds into the game with a free kick from 35 yards out just left of the goal. Her kick nicked the bottom of the crossbar, and after bouncing spun over the goal line for her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. The freshman also was involved in the second goal in the 28th minute, as her free kick from the left corner was headed in through traffic by
Jenna Caterino (
Jr.-Stanton, Mich.) for her first goal of the season.
Lakeland led 2-0 at halftime but after the Senior Day ceremony came out slow, and the Regents (4-12 overall, 1-11 NACC) capitalized five minutes into the second half. After two good chances early in the half, Rockford drew a Muskies foul in the box, and Rianna Tovar converted the penalty kick to cut Lakeland's lead in half.
The Regents continued to threaten over the next couple minutes, but Lakeland took momentum back in the 55th minute.
Lia Armstrong (
Fr.-Fort Wayne, Ind.) sent a through ball down the left side to
Marlen Reyes, who got behind her defender and after several touches hit a shot that went over goalkeeper Kaeleigh Taylor and just under the crossbar for her eighth goal of the season.
The Muskies took full control just over two minutes later, this time with Marlen's twin sister Alondra involved in the scoring.
Gwynn Manteufel (
Jr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) made a run from her defender spot and saved a pass ahead from going out of bounds, sliding and hitting a ball towards the goal that went through two Rockford players.
Alondra Reyes got to the loose ball and hit a soft looping shot over the keeper and into the net for her team-best ninth goal this year, the most by a Lakeland player since Mimi Pulido scored 13 goals in 2015.
The Muskies had several chances for more in the last 30 minutes but settled for the four goals, their fourth time this season scoring at least four goals in a match. Lakeland finished with a 17-13 lead in shot attempts, including a 13-9 lead in shots on goal. Turley made eight saves in goal while Taylor made nine saves for Rockford.
Lakeland closes out its season Wednesday when it travels to face Concordia University Wisconsin at 3:30 p.m. in Mequon.
