Series history:Â 20th meeting, Lakeland leads 18-1
The series between the Muskies and Cougars commenced with the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's first season in 2006, and Lakeland has dominated the series since winning that first meeting in five sets Oct. 19, 2006. The Muskies have defeated Concordia 12 straight times entering today, including most recently a 25-15, 27-25, 25-22 victory last season at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
Susana Stevens finished with 15 kills in that match, and she also hammered 15 kills in Lakeland's three-set win at CUC in the 2021 season. Concordia's lone win in the series came Oct. 8, 2011, a 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 win at home in River Forest.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at St. Norbert 3-1 Thursday
The Muskies saw their six-match winning streak snapped with a 25-20, 17-25, 25-21, 25-23 loss to the Green Knights. A match between two teams tied for fourth place in the NACC standings was just two points from going to a deciding fifth set, but St. Norbert came back from 23-22 down and scored the final three points of the fourth set. Stevens led Lakeland with 12 kills,
Maeve Sullivan totaled a season-high 25 digs and
Roseily Carrasquillo finished with 21 assists plus three of the Muskies' 10 service aces. Despite the loss, the Muskies still clinched their spot in the NACC Tournament with losses by Concordia Chicago and Wisconsin Lutheran on Thursday.Â
The loss did give Lakeland a tougher path to a home match in the first round of the tourney, as the Muskies now trail St. Norbert by one match in the standings and would lose a tiebreaker with the Green Knights if the teams finished tied for position in the regular season.
Concordia last time out: Lost to Marian 3-0 Thursday
The Cougars played their final home match of the season but fell to the Sabres 25-15, 25-23, 26-24. Akasia Brown finished with eight kills, Lili Hunt added seven kills and Eve Dicken posted 11 digs plus three service aces, but Concordia hit .063 as a team, well off of Marian's .186 mark for the match.
The Cougars have had some good moments in NACC play, including defeating Benedictine in five sets and also sweeping Dominican, which currently holds what would be the eighth and final qualifying spot for the NACC Tournament. CUC is currently on the outside of the tourney looking in, though, one match behind Dominican, and likely needs to win its final two conference matches to qualify for the tourney.
