Series history: 9th meeting, Lakeland leads 7-1
The Muskies and Knights have become familiar foes in recent years, with all but one of their meetings coming since 2012. Lakeland has won the last two matchups, including last year's meeting a year ago tomorrow, a 104-75 win at home here at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium as
Cam Jaeger scored 28 points. The Muskies also won on the road at MLC Nov. 6, 2021. The Knights earned their lone win over the Muskies Nov. 19, 2018, with a 70-60 win at home. Lakeland won the first five meetings in the series, including a 67-52 win in the first-ever meeting Nov. 20, 2004 in Minneapolis, MInn., in the Bethel University Tip-Off Tournament
Lakeland last time out: Lost at Greenville (Ill.) 114-107 Nov. 10
The Muskies have been idle for more than a week since losing on the road in their second straight high-scoring game to start the season. Lakeland fell way behind but did stage a big rally in the second half, trailing by 36 points with just under 16 minutes left and still by 27 with under eight minutes to play before chopping the lead late. The Muskies got as close as six points with 40 seconds left before the Panthers salted the game away at the free throw line.
Cam Jaeger scored 30 points,
Caleb Fuller added 13 points off the bench and
Isaiah Hammond added nine ponits plus 17 rebounds and eight assists. Greenville avenged a Lakeland win in the teams' previous meeting a year ago, when the Muskies set school scoring records in a 155-127 victory at home.
Martin Luther last time out: Lost at Rockford 96-70 Saturday
The Knights faced one of Lakeland's Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference rivals and hung close most of the way before the Regents pulled away late. Martin Luther trailed just 66-59 with nine minutes left after a three-pointer by Ethan Kjenstad, but Rockford went on a 19-4 run to put the game away. Nathan Miller scored 19 points to lead MLC, which shot 34.4% but stayed close making 18 of 22 from the free throw line.
About the Knights: Martin Luther continues tonight what has been an early season tour against NACC opponents. The Knights are 0-4 overall coming in, including 0-3 against Lakeland's NACC brethren, having lost at home to Wisconsin Lutheran (78-49) and MSOE (85-72) in addition to at Rockford. MLC comes over from New Ulm, Minn., and is a member of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. The Knights finished 2-23 overall last year and 0-14 in the UMAC, but four starters returned this year. Greg Holzhueter is in his seventh year as head coach for Martin Luther and is an alum and former player for the Knights who scored more than 1,000 points in his career from 2007-11.
