GREENCASTLE, Ind. – DePauw (Ind.) University made 17 three-pointers as part of its hottest shooting performance of the season and the Lakeland University women's basketball team had a tough return to play after Christmas with an 87-31 loss in the first round of the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament.
The Muskies fell to the host school on the first day of the four-team, two-day tourney and will face Lake Forest (Ill.) College in the third place game Saturday at 2 p.m. Eastern time, 1 p.m. Central. DePauw will take on Franklin (Ind.) College in the championship game after Franklin handled Lake Forest 96-64 in the second semifinal game.
The Muskies (3-7 overall) shot 31.0%, making 13 of 42 field goals, and committed 30 turnovers. It would not be nearly enough against a DePauw team that shot a season-best 51.5% (34 of 66) and got red-hot from three-point range.
The Tigers (7-4 overall) came in averaging 5.3 made three-pointers per game and hit more than eight threes just once in their first 10 games. DePauw would hit 17 of 37 from long range (45.9%), though, including nine threes in the first half in building a 47-15 halftime lead.
Lakeland stayed close for the game's first five minutes, tying the game at 7-7 early on a jumper by
A.T. Bartlett (
So.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) and getting within one at 10-9 after an offensive rebound and putback by
Lauryn Johnson (
So.-Kenosha, Wis.).
The Muskies would not score for more than 11 minutes, though, and DePauw blew the game wide open with 31 straight points. The Tigers shot 59.4% in the first half, making 19 of 32 shots, and cruised the rest of the way in the win.
Jenna Shea (
Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) led Lakeland with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers.
Kerstin Sauerbrei (
Sr.-Ripon, Wis.) added five points, and Johnson and
Dani Damrow (
Fr.-Elkhart Lake, Wis.) added five rebounds each.
Ava Hassel led DePauw with 13 points, one of three to score in double figures for the Tigers. Fourteen different players scored for the hosts, members of the North Coast Athletic Conference who finished 19-8 last year and have posted 27 consecutive winning seasons.
