Lakeland men rain in 23 triples to finish season with 107-92 win over Concordia

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's basketball team went out of its 2022-23 season with a bang, tying a school single-game record raining in 23 three-pointers in a 107-92 win over Concordia University Wisconsin Saturday on Senior Day at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

Christian Knox (Sr.-Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Aiden Polzin (So.-Clintonville, Wis.) both made seven three-pointers each, Cam Jaeger (So.-Oostburg, Wis.) added six threes, and the Muskies drained 23 of 40 from long range in all to tie the school record set Nov. 10, 2021 against Finlandia University. Lakeland clinched a winning overall record for the season, finishing 13-11 overall and 7-9 and seventh in the final Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference standings.

The Muskies blitzed the Falcons (8-16 overall, 5-11 NACC) virtually from the start, scoring 44 points and hitting 11 three-pointers in the game's first 10 minutes, including 10 consecutive from behind the arc. Jaeger hit four threes early, and Polzin's third triple of the game put Lakeland ahead 44-21 at the midway point of the first half.

The pace slowed but the Muskies kept bombing and hit 14 threes in all in the first half in taking a 59-40 lead into halftime. With both teams' offenses several steps ahead of the defenses on this day, Lakeland maintained a comfortable margin the rest of the way for all but a brief three-minute span in the second half.

The Falcons scored 11 straight points in a stretch, with a Jared Jurss three-pointer cutting the Muskies' lead to 78-70 with 11:06 to play. Lakeland responded with 10 straight points, though, including back-to-back-to-back threes by Knox, the last putting the Muskies up 89-70 with 9:08 left.

Concordia got no closer than 14 points the rest of the way. Lakeland tied the single-game mark for threes with 4:46 left when Knox's seventh trey put the Muskies over the century mark with a 101-82 lead, but the Muskies slowed the pace in the final minutes and attempted just one more three, with Knox still almost getting the record with a double-clutch 25-footer as the shot clock ran out with 48 seconds left.

Polzin finished with 27 points, Knox scored 26 and Jaeger added 24, the trio combining for 77 points and 20 three-pointers in all. Isaiah Hammond (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) added 13 points plus eight rebounds and five assists. Polzin also became the seventh player in program history to make 150 three-pointers in his career, moving past Aaron Regal (148 from 2004-08) and Carlos Campos (148 from 2016-20) into seventh place.

Lakeland finished shooting 55.9% for the game, hitting 38 of 68 shots. The Muskies also committed just five turnovers in the game, which was the final for two seniors, Knox and Quinn Gardner (Lockport, Ill.).

Concordia was actually even more efficient shooting, making 39 of 66 field goals (59.1%) but attempted just 17 from three-point land, hitting seven (41.2%). Sheboygan native Jared Jurss and NCAA Division III assists leader finished his career with a career-high 31 points and added seven assists.
