The Lakeland University men's volleyball team plays its second Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match of the season when it hosts Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday at noon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The 18 previous meetings between the two schools makes Milwaukee School of Engineering easily the most-played opponent for Lakeland since it moved its program to the varsity level in 2014. MSOE has won 12 of the last 13 meetings, including a three-set sweep a year ago this weekend at the Woltzen Gym, a 26-24, 25-21, 25-21 win as Jacob Sirny (12) and Tommy Clausz (11) combined for 23 kills. The Muskies' last win in the series was nearly five years ago, a four-set victory at home March 21, 2018. Lakeland won the first three meetings ever between the two schools, including a three-set sweep in their first-ever meeting nine years ago on Feb. 21, 2014.
Lakeland last time out: Lost to Cardinal Stritch 3-1 Monday
The Muskies fell to the Wolves 25-16, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21 in a non-conference match Monday night at home for their second straight loss. Lakeland took a while to get going, struggling in the first two sets before heating up in the third and staying with Stritch in the fourth set before the Wolves finished the match scoring six of the final eight points.
Ben Busalacchi had another big match with 18 kills and added seven digs,
Hunter Henson posted nine kills and
Eli Weinrich added six kills and six digs off the bench.
Chase Anderson also posted team highs with 25 assists and eight digs. The Muskies continued to be competitive in most of their losses, taking at least one set in a loss for the fifth time this season.
MSOE last time out: Lost to #1 Stevens (N.J.) 3-1 Feb. 11
The Raiders haven't played for nearly two weeks, since facing the then- and now again No. 1 team in the country on a neutral court in Aurora, Ill. MSOE gave a good account even in falling to the Ducks 25-23, 25-21, 26-28, 25-22. The Raiders fought off a match point to win the third set, then were tied at 21-21 in the fourth set before Stevens scored four of the final five points. Carter Shavitz finished with 17 kills and James Zippay added 14 kills, Aidan Charapata served six aces and John Wolf added five block assists in a match that also included a combined 26 blocks between the teams, including 15 by the Ducks and 11 by MSOE.
About the Raiders: MSOE finished 16-10 overall last year and 9-3 in the NACC, part of a three-way tie for third in the conference. The Raiders advanced to the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Dominican in three sets. MSOE has qualified for all four NACC tourneys since the league's first season in 2018 and won the league title in 2019. The program has had eight consecutive winning seasons, the last seven coming under current coach Shane Reid.
New Muskie: A recent addition to the Lakeland team made his debut Monday night.
Jordan Davis-Troller is a freshman middle blocker who had a service ace and a block in his first match. Davis-Troller came to Lakeland to play soccer, and in the fall as a forward tied for the team lead with four goals and was second on the squad with 10 points. Davis-Troller also played club volleyball, though, and with his 6-foot-5 height as a middle blocker immediately became one of the team's tallest players.
