PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Milwaukee School of Engineering made the plays when needed in the first two sets and went on to sweep the Lakeland University men's volleyball team in three sets Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Raiders defeated the Muskies 25-20, 25-23, 25-15, winning for the seventh straight time in the series between the schools. Lakeland dropped to 4-9 overall and 0-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, while MSOE improved to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in conference.
The Muskies were in range most of the first set and held a lead deep in the second set, only to see the Raiders win both.
Lakeland trailed 13-11 at the midpoint of the first set, but the Raiders slowly extended their lead as the set wound down. The Muskies held the upper hand in most of the second set, though, jumping to an early 6-2 lead and later holding leads of 14-11 and 19-17, the last one leading to an MSOE timeout.
The Raiders followed with three straight points to take the lead, and after trading points back and forth the teams were tied at 21-21 before Alex Cretors and Ted Simpson contributed back-to-back kills for MSOE. A kill by
Ben Busalacchi (
Jr.-Muskego, Wis.) brought Lakeland back within a point, but the Raiders reached set point at 24-22 and finished it shortly after on a Muskies service error. MSOE then controlled the final set start to finish, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and never trailing.
Busalacchi finished with match highs of 10 kills and eight digs.
Hunter Henson (
Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) added six kills. As a team the Muskies hit .029 with 23 kills and 21 errors in 69 attacks.
Chase Anderson (
Fr.-Hartford, Wis.) also finished with 14 assists.
James Zippay led MSOE with seven kills and Nick Stachura added 26 assists. The Raiders hit .338 as a team with 37 kills and 12 errors in 74 attacks, and 11 different players had at least one kill for the guests.
Lakeland is back on the court Thursday when it hosts Maranatha Baptist University for a non-conference match at 6 p.m.
