PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Hunter Henson (
Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) piled up 17 kills and the Lakeland University men's volleyball team defeated Maranatha Baptist University in three sets Thursday night in a non-conference match at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies cruised to a 25-11, 25-21, 25-19 victory over the Sabercats, winning in a sweep for the third time this year. Lakeland played its second-to-last non-conference dual of the year and improved to 5-9 overall on the season.
Henson reached double-digit kills for the third time this season and bested his previous high of 16 kills set Jan. 29 against Olivet (Mich.) College. He hit .560 for the match with just three errors in 25 attacks, the highest mark by a Muskie this season.
Lakeland as a team hit .300 with 41 kills and 17 errors, and the Muskies never trailed in any set. The Sabercats were only able to force a tie on five occasions, all coming early in the first and second sets.
Maranatha (0-24 overall) still was able to make Lakeland earn it in the second and third sets, including slicing a 19-10 deficit in the second set down to 23-21 before the Muskies closed it out with a kill by
Colin Kenney (
Jr.-Shorewood, Wis.) and an ace by Henson. Lakeland also saw a six-point lead in the third set cut to one point on three occasions, the last coming at 18-17 late in the set before the Muskies closed the match on a 7-2 run.
Ben Busalacchi (
Jr.-Muskego, Wis.) also added 10 kills in 17 attacks for a .471 hitting percentage and Kenney added seven kills in nine attempts (.778 hitting percentage).
Chase Anderson (
Fr.-Hartford, Wis.) totaled 23 assists and Kenney added four service aces, with Henson also posted three aces plus a team-best six digs.
Daniel Says led Maranatha Baptist with three kills. Zach Mueller added a match-high eight digs plus five assists.
The Muskies are home again Saturday when they face Dominican University at 1 p.m. in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
