MILWAUKEE, Wis. –
Hunter Henson (
Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.),
Ben Busalacchi (
Jr.-Muskego, Wis.) and
Tim Matijevic (
Jr.-Palatine, Ill.) combined for 49 kills and the Lakeland University men's volleyball team came back to defeat Wisconsin Lutheran College in five sets in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
The Muskies dropped the second and third sets but came back for a 25-22, 14-25, 26-28, 25-21, 15-6 victory over the Warriors. Lakeland topped WLC for the second time this season to move to 6-11 overall and 1-4 in conference, but received a much stiffer test after a three-set sweep in a non-conference match at Lutheran in February.
Henson and Matijevic both set career highs, including Henson posting 19 kills with five errors in 41 swings for a .341 hitting percentage. Matijevic also added 13 kills and hit .355 with just two errors in 31 attacks.
Busalacchi also added 17 kills, and the trio posted more than three-quarters of Lakeland's hitting production. The Muskies finished hitting .253 with 64 kills and 23 errors in 162 attacks, but still needed a rally after the Warriors (4-15 overall, 0-5 NACC) won the second set easily and then outhit Lakeland in a long third set.
The Muskies came back to control the fourth set, and then in the fifth raced out to leads of 3-1, 6-2 and 9-3. Buslacchi registered three kills in the deciding set, Matijevic added two kills and was part of two blocks, and
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Fr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) closed it out with a kill at match point.
Davis-Troller also set career highs with six kills and six blocks plus five digs.
Chase Anderson (
Fr.-Hartford, Wis.) set a career high with 44 assists and added 11 digs for a double-double, and
Eli Weinrich (
Fr.-Mequon, Wis.) led the Muskies with a career-best 13 digs. Matijevic also added five blocks, and as a team Lakeland finished with 10 blocks.
Drew Wempner paced Wisconsin Lutheran with 12 kills and James Biedenbender totaled a match-high 18 digs. The Warriors also posted nine service aces.
The Muskies are right back in action Thursday when they host Edgewood College for an NACC match starting at 5 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
