Muskies pick up sixth win in Florida with rout of Oswego State as part of DH split

JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. – Jordan August (So.-Schererville, Ind.) drove in four runs over two games and the Lakeland University softball team clinched a winning record on its spring break trip while splitting a pair Thursday afternoon at the Auburndale Softball Complex.

The Muskies routed Oswego State (N.Y.) University 11-1 in six innings in their opener Thursday morning for their sixth win on their Florida trip. Lakeland would fall to Ohio Northern University 6-2 in its second game of the day and is now 6-4 overall on the season and 6-2 in eight games of its 10-game trip.

August went 1-for-3 in the first game with two RBIs, including driving in runs in both the fifth and sixth innings when the Muskies blew the game open. Lakeland led 3-0 going into the fifth but scored three times in the inning and then tacked on five in the sixth to get in position to end the game after six innings on account of the eight-run rule.

The Muskies got the best of Oswego (2-5 overall) in what coming in appeared to be a pitchers' duel between Lakers lefthander Fiona Higgins and Skylar Hall (Jr.-Negaunee, Mich.). Higgins entered the game with 33 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings, but Lakeland manufactured three runs early on just one hit through four innings, and then chased Higgins from the game in the fifth.

Hannah Volom (So.-Portage, Ind.) led off the inning with a single, her second hit of the game, and Peyton Harlow (Fr.-La Porte, Ind.) singled with one out to put runners at the corners. Volom then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0, and August followed with a single to score Harlow, ending the outing for Higgins. Melanie Watters (So.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) also added an RBI single against reliever Chelsea Sellars.

Lakeland then added five runs in the sixth, including August's second RBI coming on a fielder's choice. Natalie Miller (Fr.-North Fond du Lac, Wis.) also drove in a run while reaching on an error, and freshman Abbie Schmidt (Ellison Bay, Wis.) added a two-run single for her first collegiate hit.

Hannah Nelson (Jr.-Loves Park, Ill.) also reached base three times and scored three runs, and the Muskies' opportunistic offense was plenty for Hall in another outstanding performance. The junior through a complete game four-hitter, allowing just a single unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Hall also struck out a career-high 12, outdueling Higgins who struck out seven in the first four innings but allowed four hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings.

The Muskies had a very short turnaround before their second game against Ohio Northern (4-4 overall), and the Polar Bears pounced early with all six of their runs over the first three innings.

Kaylie Griffin hit a solo home run and ONU starting pitcher Ashley Lenser added an RBI double, and Muskies starting pitcher Miller exited after two-plus innings in her first collegiate start. Lenser also pitched a complete game, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts.

Lakeland received excellent pitching in relief from Madi Johnson (Jr.-Vernon Hills, Ill.), who threw five innings and allowed just two hits with four strikeouts. August had two of the Muskies' three hits, including a two-run single in the sixth to score Nelson and Harlow and get the Muskies on the board and within 6-2 before Lenser retired the final four hitters of the game.

Lakeland wraps up its trip to central Florida on Friday with its final two games in The Spring Games, both again at the Auburndale Softball Complex. The Muskies take on Endicott (Mass.) College at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time/10:30 a.m. Central and then face Knox (Ill.) College at 4:30 p.m. Eastern/3:30 p.m. Central.
