PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Dominican University had a trio of players post at least 10 kills and Lakeland University lost in three sets in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference men's volleyball match Saturday at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies were competitive in all three sets but fell 25-22, 25-18, 28-26 to the defending NACC champions. Lakeland dropped to 5-10 overall and 0-3 in conference, while the Stars improved to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the NACC.
Casey Goss finished with 13 kills and both Tanner Dahman and Cal Iwinski added 10 kills each for Dominican. The trio also combined for a blazing .540 hitting percentage, and the Stars hit .360 as a team with 40 kills and 13 errors in 75 attacks.
The Muskies weren't able to match Dominican's firepower, but still stayed in the match with nine kills each from
Ben Busalacchi (
Jr.-Muskego, Wis.) and
Hunter Henson (
Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.), five kills from
Colin Kenney (
Jr.-Shorewood, Wis.) and four more by
Tim Matijevic (
Jr.-Palatine, Ill.). Lakeland also added six service aces-four from Busalacchi and two more from Kenney-and also benefitted from the Stars committing 19 service errors.
The Muskies made a run in the first set, coming back from a 20-11 deficit to get within two points late, and also led almost the entirety of the first half of the second set before Dominican finished on a 15-6 run. The third set, though, was where Lakeland especially saw a prime opportunity slip away.
The teams combined for 14 ties and five lead changes in the third, but the Muskies used a late 5-1 run to go ahead 23-20, just two points from extending the match to a fourth set. The Stars rallied to tie at 23-23 before an attack error gave Lakeland a set point at 24-23. Dominican would save the match point and would get three match points of its own, finally ending it on the third on a Muskies attack error.
Lakeland finished hitting .119 with 28 kills and 18 attack errors in 84 swings.
Chase Anderson (
Fr.-Hartford, Wis.) handled setting duties and finished with 22 assists.
The Muskies now get ready to hit the road for their next four matches, first taking on Rockford University Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
