Marian uses red-hot hitting to top Lakeland in three in NACC duel

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Lakeland University was unable to slow down Marian University's attack and was defeated in three sets Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference men's volleyball match at Marian's Sadoff Gymnasium.

The Sabres prevailed in convincing fashion, 25-15, 25-17, 25-8 in the teams' lone meeting of the season. Lakeland dropped to 6-13 overall and 1-5 in the NACC, while Marian is 12-8 overall and 5-3 in conference.

The Sabres were close to automatic on the attack, hitting .500 for the match with 42 kills and just five errors in 74 attacks. Marian hit at least .467 in all three sets, including better than .500 in the second and third sets.

The Muskies struggled to a .027 attack percentage with 21 kills and 19 errors in 74 attempts. Lakeland led only briefly early in the first and second sets and was done in by long runs by the Sabres in all three sets.

Marian had runs of eight straight and later six straight points in the first set. The Sabres also led just 14-11 past the midway point of the first set before scoring six straight and nine of the next 10 points, and the hosts closed it out scoring the first five points of the third set and added another five-point run for a 17-3 lead on the way to a rout in the final set.

Ben Busalacchi (Jr.-Muskego, Wis.) finished with six kills to lead Lakeland. Hunter Henson (Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) added five kills and four digs, Tim Matijevic (Jr.-Palatine, Ill.) also added four kills and Chase Anderson (Fr.-Hartford, Wis.) finished with 12 assists and four digs.

Cam Muller led Marian with 13 kills. Aaron Velasco added 11 kills and Derek Wills finished with seven kills.

The Muskies are back home Friday to host NACC-leading Benedictine University for a 6 p.m. first serve in the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
