Lakeland comes up short in pair of losses on diamond to St. Norbert

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University baseball team was unable to come up with timely hits most of the day and lost twice to St. Norbert College Friday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader.

The Green Knights prevailed by scores of 7-3 and 6-4, drawing even with the Muskies in the conference standings. Lakeland fell to 4-17 overall and 2-8 in the NACC while St. Norbert moved to 8-17 overall and 2-8 in conference.

The day was one of missed opportunities for the Muskies, who stranded a combined 23 runners over the two games. Lakeland left multiple runners on base in four different innings in both games, and in the second game stranded runners in seven of the nine innings.

The Muskies still held the upper hand for a good part of the first game, including scoring first when Chris Day (Fr.-Victorville, Calif.) led off with a single and scored on a fielder's choice by Lane Sobieski (Sr.-Berlin, Wis.). Lakeland also broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth when Sobieski walked with two outs and later scored on an RBI single by Zak Keegan (So.-Frankfort, Ill.).

The Green Knights flipped the game in the seventh inning, scoring four times on just two hits. Consecutive walks to start the inning resulted in Brody Fay (So.-Surprise, Ariz.) departing after six-plus innings, and Trevor Reinhardt reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Caden Uhlenbrauck then reached on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 3-3, and Peyton Just walked with the bases loaded to bring in the go-ahead run. Tommy Sheehan then hit a two-run single to center to bring in two runs and give St. Norbert a 6-3 lead.

The Muskies went quietly in the seventh and eighth innings, and in the ninth put two runners on with one out before a pair of strikeouts looking to end it. Day and Keegan both had two hits while Fay took the loss, allowing four hits and four runs (one earned) with four strikeouts.

The offensive struggles in the first game continued in the second, with Lakeland going scoreless until the sixth inning. The Green Knights by then had built a 3-0 lead, including two runs in the third and another in the fifth before the Muskies scratched out a run in the sixth. Tyler LaMack (Sr.-Pewaukee, Wis.) led off with a double and reached third on an infield single by Sobieski. Noah Leopold (So.-Appleton, Wis.) was then hit by a pitch with one out to load the bases, but Lakeland settled for a single run when Austin Palmer (So.-Oro Valley, Ariz.) drove in LaMack with a sacrifice fly.

St. Norbert added two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth for a 6-1 lead, but the Muskies generated their first extended rally of the day in the bottom of the ninth. Lane Sobieski (Sr.-Berlin, Wis.) led off with a single and Day and Keegan later singled, the latter scoring pinch runner Jay Cournoyer (So.-Myakka City, Fla.) to make it 6-2. Lane Sobieski later walked with the bases loaded to bring in another run, and Jacob Wollschlager (Fr.-Kenosha, Wis.) reached on a fielder's choice to score Keegan. Leopold came to the plate as the tying run with two outs but hit into a fielder's choice to end the game.

LaMack, Lane Sobieski and OakLee Spens (Jr.-Burbank, Calif.) all had three hits each in the second game including LaMack hitting a pair of doubles and Spens stealing two bases. Andrew Krause (Fr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) took the loss, allowing nine hits and three runs with two strikeouts over five innings.
