KOHLER, Wis. –
Alessandro Bianchi (
Sr.-Venice, Italy) and
Levi Everts (
So.-Hartford, Wis.) were both double-winners and the Lakeland University men's tennis team won a dual for the first time this season, topping Marian University 7-2 Saturday at Sports Core.
The Muskies improved to 1-6 overall on the season and 1-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, prevailing in a battle between two teams that both came in looking for their first dual win of the season. Lakeland also stayed alive in the fight for a spot in the NACC Tournament, and its final regular season match against Concordia University Chicago on Sunday will be a battle for the final spot in the conference tourney, with the winner clinching the No. 6 seed in the tournament.
The Muskies claimed three wins by default on Saturday but also won four of the six contested matches, including both at doubles. Bianchi and Everts teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Payton Fox and Jarod Luna 8-3, and
Ben Busalacchi (
Jr.-Muskego, Wis.) and
Evan Vorpahl (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) also edged Marian's Nathan Hunter and Derek Wills 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.
Bianchi also earned a straight sets win over Luna at No. 3 singles, winning 6-4, 6-4. Everts also added his first singles win of the season, besting Fox 7-5, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
Vorpahl and Busalacchi also both went to three sets in their singles matches. Vorpahl won the second set before falling to Hunter 6-4, 1-6, 10-2 at No. 1 singles, and Busalacchi and Wills engaged in a marathon at No. 2 singles before Wills pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 win.
Lakeland wraps up its regular season Sunday against Concordia Chicago at home at Sports Core starting at 11 a.m.
