MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin dominated the first game and then pulled away in a close game late to sweep Lakeland University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader played at CUW's Kapco Park Saturday.
The Falcons won the first game 17-0 in seven innings and then scored 10 runs in their final two at bats in a 15-2 win in the nightcap of games that were scheduled to be played at Lakeland but were moved to Concordia but with the Muskies serving as the home team.
Lakeland (6-23 overall, 4-14 NACC) had its far better showing in the second game, scoring twice in the second inning and getting a career-best game at the plate from
Landen Sobieski (
Berlin, Wis.). The sophomore went 4-for-4 with a double, and also started the Muskies' scoring rally with a leadoff single in the bottom of the second.
Sobieski also scored Lakeland's first run, coming around to score after an error on a sacrifice bunt by
Kyle Gould (
So.-Crete, Ill.). The Muskies added a second run when
Austin Palmer (
So.-Oro Valley, Ariz.) bunted, allowing
Zak Keegan (
So.-Frankfort, Ill.) to cross and draw Lakeland within 3-2.
Concordia (19-12 overall, 11-6 NACC) scored two more in the top of the third to pull back ahead by three, but Lakeland put runners on in four straight innings from the fourth inning onward, including
Griffin Robinson (
So.-Pike Road, Ala.) hitting a one-out double and getting to third with two outs in the seventh before a potential rally fizzled.
Luke Pecore (
Fr.-Bowler, Wis.) also pitched well in relief after starter
Anthony Yust (
Fr.-Kenosha, Wis.) left after just over one inning. Pecore allowed three runs over six innings with six strikeouts before running into trouble in the seventh, eventually allowing four more runs as the Falcons built a 9-2 lead. CUW then added six more runs in the top of the ninth.
The Muskies had a much rougher time in the first game, as Concordia put together innings scoring nine and six runs, in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively. CUW pounded out 20 hits and also got a no-hitter from Ryan Green, who struck out four and walked one in the victory.
Lakeland returns to the field again Sunday when it travels to face Milwaukee School of Engineering at noon at MSOE Raiders Stadium in Glendale.
